Help Us Celebrate!

Waterloo: It is nearly time for the birthday cake! If you are attending the 15th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education in Waterloo, Ontario, this summer (see page 671 of the June issue for more information), this is your invitation to spend Tuesday evening helping us celebrate. In the early evening from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be 26 posters that describe our history, covers, editors,... Some have been produced by the Journal staff or members of our Board of Publication, but others come from our readers who have a favorite Journal story to share with you.

Following the poster session, be sure to join us for pizza and a piece of our birthday cake. The cake is about 6 feet high and is being specially designed in one of the round forms of the periodic table.

Boston: If you are attending the Fall ACS Meeting in Boston (August 2327) there are more festivities in which you can participate. Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. will be another large poster session with lots of visual information about the Journal's past, future, and points in between. Many people who have played a role in our existence will be there, and we hope you will be, too. Refreshments!

On Monday there will be an all-day symposium, "Remembering Yesterday, Looking Toward Tomorrow", organized by Doris and Ken Kolb. In the morning there will be talks about the Journal's past, featuring speakers who have helped to shape and preserve this publication. The afternoon will focus on the Journal's present and future, as well as the future of scientific publishing.

Calendars

If you can't join us in Waterloo or Boston, no need to despair-there is still something special for every subscriber. We are preparing a special 4-color calendar for 1999 in celebration of our 75th year. It will have 12 pages of striking color graphics featuring every teacher's favorite topic-colorful chemical demonstrations. Calendars will be mailed to all subscribers along with the September 1998 issue. Next month we will be able to give you a preview glimpse of our present to you and also tell you about how you can obtain extra copies. They will make great (and affordable) gifts and we fully expect them to be collector's items.

Donation to High School Office

It was a happy time in the High School Office when a shipment of nine boxes of Journals arrived. This was in answer to our request for a donation, since Emory Howell had only his personal collection to refer to and that collection dates back only to 1964.

The boxes contained volumes 1-75 of the Journal plus some additional issues and some books that we have published. They were from the personal collection of Robert K. Fitzgerel, now of Newcastle, Maine, who donated them. Emory Howell reports that he referred to these issues to check references as soon as they were unpacked. Now he is designing a book plate that will be placed in each issue, noting that they are a part of the High School Office as well as the name of the donor.

Journal Exchange

The Journal office in Madison is still looking for one copy of volumes 5 through 9. There are two bound sets in Journal House, but one set has these issues missing from it. If anyone could help us fill in this gap, we would be very appreciative.

As others of you search for back issues or have a collection to pass along to someone else, please let us know and we will try to make connections.

Check Your Carrier Sheet

The carrier is the white sheet just inside the plastic mailing sleeve. We suggest that you save this sheet because it has important subscription information.

Please take a minute to check the label on the carrier. It carries much useful information, particularly on the second line. The first (5-digit) number on the second line is your account number. It serves to identify you in our records and should be used in all correspondence about your subscription. This is the number to use for access to JCE Online+. A date (e.g. MAR 2000) also appears on the second line. This date tells you when your Journal subscription expires. You can expect to receive renewal notices several months before this date.

The reverse side of the form carries what we hope is useful information about the Journal. It will change every few months.

Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
