A solution conductivity apparatus is described that can be used to measure the relative conductivity of various solutions. The apparatus can be used as either a hand-held model employing a 10-element LED display or a lecture-hall demonstration model employing a 10-incandescent-lamp array. Both meters use a headphone plug probe, which is completely safe from electrical shock and can be held between the fingers at no risk to the investigator. The tester has an ac source to avoid polarization effects, which degrade the performance of a device using only direct current.
