Featured on the Cover: September 1999
The cover images show gold that has been treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid (lower left), concentrated nitric acid (lower right), and a mixture of the two (lower middle and upper). The gold reacts with the concentrated acid mixture which is referred to as aqua regia ("royal water"), but not with the acids separately. The images were taken by Jerrold J. Jacobsen and are available on the JCE Software CD-ROM, Chemistry Comes Alive! Volume 3 (described on pages 1311-1312). The cover was designed by Betsy True.
