News from Journal House

Recent Releases, JCE Software

The following issues have been released by JCE Software. Copies have been shipped to those who ordered them.

The Journal Goes to the BCCE

Read the announcement on pp 697-698 about the 16th BCCE to be held in summer 2000 and you will learn that Monday, July 31, is The Day of the Ice Cream Social. The sponsors of this social event (to be held following the evening demo program) are 2YC3 and JCE. We hope to make this a venue for meeting new people, especially newcomers to the conference. And of course there will be ice cream and toppings, custom dipped by 2YC3 officers and members as well as Journal editors and staff; it has been rumored that some list experience as soda jerks on their résumé!

The Journal will have a booth in the exhibit area. Be sure to stop by and check out our newest video. We will even give you guidance about building it into PowerPoint presentations.

Award Deadlines

Prize for Young Scientists

The Amersham Pharmacia Biotech & Science Prize for Young Scientists has been established to provide support to scientists at the beginning of their careers. In 2000 the prize will recognize outstanding graduate students in molecular biology, from all regions of the world. This international prize will be awarded for the most outstanding thesis in the general area of molecular biology as described in a 1000-word essay. The grand prize winner will receive $25,000 and have his or her essay published in Science. Regional award winners will receive $5,000 and their essays will appear in Science Online.

Entrants must have been awarded their Ph.D. between January 1 and December 31, 1999. The deadline for entries is June 30, 2000. For full information contact Young Scientist Prize Selection Committee, Science, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Room 1053, Washington, DC 20005 or consult the information on the Web site. Coverage of prizes from previous years, including the essays of grand prize winners and regional winners, may be found here.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings,
Opportunities

Sabbatical or Career Change Opportunity

Chemists may apply for the American Chemical Society Congressional Fellowship and Science Policy Fellowship. The fellowships provide an opportunity to

  • work in the Congress or ACS using your scientific and technical expertise
  • gain first-hand knowledge of the government and contribute to decision making

The deadline for applications is January 5, 2001. For a brochure contact ACS Office of Society Services, 1155 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036; 1-800/227-5558;

Mathematics on the Web

The first-ever MathML conference, "MathML and Math on the Web," will be held October 20-21, 2000 on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The conference will present current research and applications involving MathML, an XML application for describing mathematical notation and capturing both its structure and its content. The primary goal of MathML is to enable mathematics to be served, received, and processed on the World Wide Web, just as HTML has enabled this functionality for text. Authors are requested to submit abstracts of proposed talks by email to submissions@mathmlconference.org. The deadline for submission of abstracts is June 2, 2000. Notification of acceptances will be sent out on or before June 23, 2000. "MathML and Math on the Web" is being sponsored by Wolfram Research, IBM, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), Waterloo Maple, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Additional conference details as well as submission guidelines are available here.

NEACT Annual Summer Conference

NEACT, the New England Association of Chemistry Teachers, is celebrating its one hundred second year with its 62nd Summer Conference. The four-day conference will be held from Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. The theme for this year's conference is Marine Chemistry, and the keynote speaker is Michael Pilson, Department of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. A full roster of guest speakers will add their expertise to the program. The conference will also offer opportunities to attend workshops, tours, and other events that are available in the Bristol--Newport area.

The program chairperson is Peter J. Nassiff, Science Department chairperson, Burlington High School. For further information check the NEACT Website or email neact2000@yahoo.com.

Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
