Reviewed WWW Sites, New JCE Internet Column
David B. Shaw, Madison Area Technical College, is the editor of the JCE Internet column, Reviewed WWW Sites. The goal of this column is to provide JCE readers with access to peer-reviewed sites that will be useful in chemistry classes or for chemistry teachers at all levels. Sites are listed on the basis of the evaluations of at least two peer reviewers and the feature editor. For each listed site we provide an abstract that summarizes the site's purpose, content, and organization. We also list JCE keywords that apply to the site, whether the site requires a high-speed Internet connection, and what subdisciplines of chemistry and educational levels (high school, college, etc.) can make effective use of the site.
We encourage readers to help make this site as useful as possible by nominating WWW sites for review and by serving as volunteer reviewers of WWW sites. To be evaluated for inclusion in Reviewed WWW Sites, a site can be nominated by its author, by a member of JCE's editorial staff, or by a third party. The nominator must provide
- The URL
- An abstract that describes the site in 400 words or less
- A list of JCE keywords that characterize the site. (Keywords must be selected from those in this list.)
Nominations should be sent by email to JCEWWWsites@chem.wisc.edu.
Reviewers are drawn from JCE's thousands of volunteers who review manuscripts. To be included as a reviewer of WWW sites, make certain that the keyword Internet is in your reviewer profile. If you are already a reviewer, send an email to jce@chem.wisc.edu and ask that the keyword Internet be added to your reviewer profile. If you are not yet a JCE reviewer, retrieve a reviewer questionnaire (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) and print it. Fill out the form, check all keywords that apply to your interests and expertise, make certain to check the keyword Internet, and fax the form to 608/262-7145. You can also mail the form to JCE Editorial Office, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 209 N. Brooks Street, Madison, WI 53715-1116. We look forward to your active participation in making JCE a valuable resource for chemistry teachers worldwide.

Science History Tour to Ireland, Summer 2001
The next trip led by Science History Tours will be to Ireland from June 20 through July 4 in summer 2001. The theme will be Ireland's scientific heritage, and the group will travel around Ireland for two weeks. In addition to science history, every opportunity will be taken to interact with local teachers, historians, and other people of interest. Tour members will also be able to participate in cultural and other events. Traveling companions are welcome. Persons traveling alone can be introduced if they would like to share a room to save single-room supplements.
A concurrent college course (3 graduate hours cost $150 last year) will be taught by Lee Marek, with many additional lectures by local experts.
The trip will be run at cost, which should not be more than about $2400 per person double occupancy. This will include all accommodations and breakfasts in Ireland from June 20 until the morning of July 4, at least one other meal per day (on average), all entrances to museums and other venues, all lecture fees, all surface transportation by luxury coach, and a few glasses of wine here and there. It does not include air transportation from your home to Ireland and back. Our three prior trips have received outstanding reviews from participants and been voted excellent value for money. A Web presentation of our first trip done by one of the tour members can be found here. A second presentation can be found here.
To be put on the mailing list for the 2001 tour, contact Yvonne Twomey, 841 Kinston Court, Naperville, IL 60540; phone: 630/961-9811; email: ytwomey@mcs.com. Or contact Lee Marek; phone: 630/420-7516; email: LMarek@aol.com.
