Updates have become a way of life for all of us using technology. Instead of installing great new applications, we now spend much of our time upgrading the ones we already have. JCE Online is certainly not an exception. Areas JCE Online has recently updated include the new materials and expanded features described below.

Chemistry Comes Alive!

Chemistry Comes Alive!Chemistry Comes Alive! is our series of video and images on CD-ROM that you can use to add dynamic media to your digital presentations. There are now five CD-ROMs in the Chemistry Comes Alive! series; there soon will be more, and all use modern compression technology (QuickTime, Sorensen) that enables convenient viewing of the video over the Internet. There is a wealth of easy-to-use chemical imagery--now how do you find the image you need?

In addition to creating this wonderful library of images we have been busy making it easy for you to find them. CCA! author Jerrold Jacobsen has updated the Chemistry Comes Alive! area at JCE Online (see Links below). The updated CCA! site consolidates the contents of the entire series and makes it easier to find a particular video or image. A single search can now find information from any of the published CCA! volumes. All of the textual information on each volume is included. Eighteen sample videos and images can also be viewed online to give you an idea of the quality you can expect on the CDs. A gallery page presents a different selection of images each time you view it and links you to still images and text.

The table of contents, textbook cross references, and keywords from each volume have been consolidated so that one search covers all published volumes. In addition, you can browse online all of the text and many of the still images. A search function enables you to find any CCA! topic on any CD by entering keywords.

The new Chemistry Comes Alive! home page. You'll see an eye-catching image that links to a movie and have easy access to all CCA! volumes.

Biographical Snapshots Added

Several snapshots have been added to Biographical Snapshots of Famous Women and Minority Chemists, bringing the current number to 36. The biographical snapshots themselves are fascinating, and the list of related WWW sites and bibliographic references that editor Barbara Burke provides for each one are an invaluable starting point for further exploration into the life of the chemists portrayed. To give your students an appreciation for the human side of the practice of science, point them to this resource.

JCE HS CLIC, for High School Teachers

Each issue of the Journal has a lot of new information useful to high school chemistry teachers, and Assistant Editor Erica Jacobsen has been busy updating the JCE High School ChemEd Learning Information Center (JCE HS CLIC) to include this. She has added many new links and refined page navigation and the categories used to find CLIC resources. The result: it will be easier for you to get to a wealth of resources. By collecting and categorizing the information high school teachers are most interested in, JCE HS CLIC shows the broad range of articles that JCE offers and helps teachers digest 140 or so pages of JCE each month. To see what we have to offer, go to CLIC now!

Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
