In their paper "Teaching Science Problem Solving: An Overview of Experimental Work" (Journal of Research in Science Teaching2001,38, 442-468), Taconis, Ferguson-Hessler, and Broekkamp present a meta-analysis of results from 40 quantitative studies of problem solving and identify strategies that proved to be effective in developing problem-solving abilities in science students.
