Awards Announced

ACS Parsons Award

The winner of the 2003 Charles Lathrop Parsons Award has been selected by the ACS Board of Directors. The award, in recognition of outstanding public service to chemistry, was announced at the Spring 2002 ACS National Meeting in Orlando.

National Medal of Science

The recipients of the National Medal of Science have been named by President George W. Bush and include three chemists among the 15 recipients.

  • Ernest R. Davidson, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN
  • Raymond Davis Jr., formerly of Brookhaven National Laboratory
  • Gabor A. Somorjai, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA

National Medal of Technology

Dow Chemical Company is the recipient of the 2002 National Medal of Technology, which will be presented by President George W. Bush in June. The citation reads in part "for the vision to create great science and innovative technology in the chemical industry and the positive impact that commercialization of this technology has had on society." The award will be accepted on behalf of Dow by Michael D. Parker, Dow's chief executive officer.

2002 EAS Awards

The Eastern Analytical Symposium announces additional winners of its 2002 EAS Awards, to be presented at the organization's annual meeting November 18–21, 2002, at the Garden State Exhibit Center, Somerset, NJ.

  • Fred Hawkridge, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. American Microchemical Society Benedetti-Pichler Award.
  • Joel Harris, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT. New York Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy Gold Medal Award.

Integrating Science and Mathematics Education Research into Teaching

A conference with the theme, "Integrating Science and Mathematics Education Research into Teaching" will take place from June 23–25, 2002, at the University of Maine in Orono. A Web site with all conference information is at http://perlnet.umephy.maine.edu/center/2002announce.htm.

Symposium on Philosophy of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Sixth Summer Symposium on the Philosophy of Chemistry and Biochemistry, sponsored by the International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry, is scheduled for August 4–8, 2002, at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Eastern Analytical Symposium

The Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS) announces plans for its 2002 meeting, to be held November 18–21, 2002, at the Garden State Exhibit Center, Somerset, NJ. The conference will feature more than 600 papers in invited and contributed symposia and poster sessions, seven major award presentations, one- and two-day short courses, exhibitor workshops, and more than 200 exhibitors. National Conference, RACI

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute's Division of Chemical Education is holding its national conference from November 30–December 5, 2002, in Melbourne, Australia. Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics

The SCI 2002 Organizing Committee announces the 6th Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics that will be held from July 14–18, 2002, in Orlando, FL. This year's conference will emphasize innovations in the area of educational systems, technologies and methodologies. More information may be found on the conference Web site.

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.


C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students. 


JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
