Recent Releases, JCE Software

Journal of Chemical Education on CD-ROM has been released by JCE Software and shipped to those who have placed orders. See this January 2002 article for more information about the CD-ROM; to learn about other new and upcoming issues from JCE Software, consult the February 2002 Prospectus article.

Journal of Chemical Education on CD-ROM, 2001 contains two full years of JCE Issues (January-December 2001 and January-December 2000) on one small CD-ROM. It works on both Macintosh and Windows computers and contains the full text, graphics, tables, abstracts, and color for everything published in the Journal, including supplemental materials and annual index.

This annual CD is formatted so that the articles retain their original printed appearance and are easy to find and view: with a few mouse clicks you can easily locate, read, and print an article from your computer. Full-text searching for any author, title, word, or phrase enables you to find what you are looking for, quickly.

A complete description of the annual CD appears online.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities

17th BCCE

The 17th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) will be held July 28-August 1, 2002 at Western Washington University, Bellingham. The deadline for submission of abstracts for papers and poster papers is February 25, 2002. The conference Registration book will be available in March, at which time the outline of the program will be available on the BCCE Web site.

A conference brochure has been mailed to all members and affiliate members of the ACS Division of Chemical Education. Information may also be found on the BCCE Web site, including that about travel and vacations. Conference attendees will find the Bellingham area a convenient place to coordinate with a summer vacation in the Pacific Northwest.

If you have ideas for a Birds-of-a-Feather session, please send them to Sara Selfe. If you want to be sure that your name is on the BCCE mailing list or if you have any questions about the conference--how to get there, where to stay, what to do, or how much it will cost--email the General Chair, George S. Kriz or telephone him at 360/650-3126.

CUR, Ninth National Conference

The Ninth National Conference of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) will be held June 19-22, 2002, at Connecticut College, New London, CT. CUR, founded in 1978 by chemists at primarily undergraduate institutions, has as its mission to support and promote high-quality undergraduate student/faculty collaborative research and scholarship. Membership in the organization, from more than 870 colleges and universities, includes the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, and social sciences.

This year's conference features 15 concurrent sessions of presentations, panel discussions, and workshops that address both general issues on undergraduate research and discipline-specific topics. The conference also offers opportunities for informal interactions and has a child care program (CUR Kids) during the conference. Further information and online registration is available at the CUR Web site.

Environmental Chemistry Symposium

A Symposium on Environmental Chemistry will be held Friday, May 17, 2002, at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada. The primary purpose of the symposium is to enable chemical educators, chemistry students, chemists, and environmental scientists to hear outstanding speakers on a wide range of current topics in environmental chemistry. Details can be found at the symposium Web site.

Other events accompany the symposium: a one-day excursion to Gros Morne National Park is planned for Thursday, May 16; following this symposium the Atlantic Region Student Chemistry Conference--ChemCon2002--and the Annual General Meeting of the Atlantic Region of the Chemical Institute of Canada will be held.

Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
