The view of Ebaugh Pond (Ohio) on the cover reveals only the surface of environmental changes that are transforming this landscape. Students at Denison University collected data on lead concentrations in sediment as a function of position in the lake. They used a geographic information system to display the data and generate a model of sediment deposition rates. Ramos, Miller, and Korfmacher describe these efforts in "Implementation of a Geographic Information System in the Chemistry Laboratory: An Exercise in Integrating Environmental Analysis and Assessment". Karl Korfmacher provided the photograph and graphic images.

The cover was designed by Betsy True.
