News from Journal House

JCE Collections Available

Occasionally, collections of Journal of Chemical Education back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE provides the service of trying to match the donated collections with interested recipients. Typically, recipients are expected to pay shipping costs or, if they live near the donor, to pick up the collection. Recipients should realize that shipping large, heavy collections may cost a few hundred dollars, depending on location. Journal issues cannot be shipped by U.S. Postal Service media mail because they contain advertising.

The collections described below are available at present. Anyone interested in obtaining one of these collections should contact Erica Jacobsen.

  • Roseburg, Oregon: Collection from approximately 1965–1999 and thought to have no issues missing.
  • River Falls, Wisconsin: Collection from 1954–1992, with the following issues missing (1954 1–8, 11, 12; 1955 1, 4–12; 1956 1–12; 1957 1–9; 1962 1; 1977 1–12; 1985 1–6; 1992 12).
  • Chicago, Illinois: Collection from 1994–2003.

If you have a collection and would like JCE’s assistance in finding a suitable individual or institution to which to donate it, contact Erica Jacobsen. JCE is able to provide information about a valuation of the donated collection.

Old Issues Wanted: The Chemistry Leaflet

The Chemistry Leaflet was published by the Journal of Chemical Education beginning in 1927. It was a weekly publication for high school chemistry students during the academic year. Each issue discussed chemistry relevant to topics students were studying during the week the issue arrived. Through several transformations of the title and publishers, The Chemistry Leaflet is a predecessor of today’s ChemMatters (see below).

The JCE editorial office has recently been the recipient of a partial collection (volume IV, 1930–1931) but is interested in making the collection more nearly complete, with the thought that it would be eventually possible to scan the collection and make it available to subscribers.

If you have copies of The Chemistry Leaflet and would be willing to donate them to JCE, send an email message to JCE putting Chemistry Leaflet in the subject line or send a letter by surface mail to the editorial office.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities

2004 Welch Foundation Chemical Research Conference

The Welch Foundation’s 48th chemical research conference, “Chemistry of Self-Organized and Hybrid Materials” will be held October 25–26, 2004, in Houston, TX. The conference will be divided into four areas: research broadly focused on the use of nanostructures in controlling chemical sensors, biodiagnostic responses, and liquid crystalline properties, led by Richard M. Crooks; composite nanoscaled arrays, discussing practical uses of nanomaterials and nanocrystals in optic and photonic applications, led by T. Randall Lee; exploring nanotechnology at the interface with biology, led by Eric V. Anslyn of the University of Texas at Austin; and synthetic approaches to nanoscaled macromolecules, led by Vicki L. Colvin. Allen J. Bard, the 2004 recipient of the Welch Award, will present his award lecture, “An Electrochemical Life”, at the conference. For more information, visit the Web site (accessed Sep 2004).

International Congress of Nanotechnology 2004

The International Congress of Nanotechnology and Nano World Expo 2004 will be held November 7–11, 2004, at the Oakland Convention Center, Oakland, CA. The conference theme is Bridging to the Next Frontier. For further information see the Web site (accessed Sep 2004).

Outreach at Fall ACS Regional Meetings

There are six ACS regional meetings in fall–winter 2004; five will take place after this issue is mailed to subscribers or made available on JCE Online. The ACS Division of Chemical Education (CHED) will be represented at each—with a table; materials about CHED in general, the Examinations Institute, and JCE; and a (friendly!) volunteer. Here is where we will be.

  • Great Lakes Region, October 17–20, Hotel Père Marquette, Peoria, IL. Paul Charlesworth, facilitator
  • Midwest Regional Meeting, October 20–22, Manhattan Holidome, Manhattan, KS. Paul Rillema, facilitator
  • Western Regional Meeting, October 27–30, Doubletree Hotel, Sacramento, CA. Boyd Earl, facilitator
  • Northeast Regional Meeting, October 31–November 3, Rochester Riverside Convention Center and Hyatt Regency Hotel, Rochester, NY. Allene Johnson, facilitator
  • Southeast Regional Meeting, November 10–13, Sheraton Imperial Conference Center, Research Triangle Park, NC. Carol White, facilitator

Science History Tour 2005

The theme of the summer 2005 Science History Tour will be “Science Behind the Iron Curtain”. The two-week trip starts in the second half of June (the exact dates have not yet been decided). The group will travel to Dresden and the Saxony region of Germany; Prague and other places in the Czech Republic, and end in Vienna, Austria.

Accommodations will be in comfortable, welcoming hotels where all rooms have private bathrooms. During the tour all admission fees to museums, fees for lectures, and taxes are included, along with land transportation, hotels and breakfasts, and at least one other meal per day. The cost of the 2005 tour has not yet been calculated, but for guidance the 2004 tour cost was $2850 per person, double occupancy; transatlantic air fare is not included. Graduate credit is available; CPDUs are also available for teachers.

For further information or to be put on the mailing list, contact either Yvonne Twomey, 841 Kinston Court, Naperville, IL 60540; phone: 630/961-9811; or Lee Marek; phone: 630/420-7516. A Web presentation of past trips is available (accessed Sep 2004).

ChemMatters 20th Anniversary CD-ROM Available

ChemMatters magazine, published by the ACS Education Division, connects high school students with the fascinating chemistry of their everyday lives. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, ChemMatters has made available 20 years of issues on a searchable CD-ROM. A single copy is $25 (U.S.); site licenses for networked use are also available. Subscriptions to ChemMatters continue to be $12 each (U.S.); five or more copies to a single address reduces the price to $5 each. The online Teacher’s Guide is free.

To order the ChemMatters CD-ROM or to subscribe, telephone ACS customer service, 800/227-5558 or go to the Web site (accessed Sep 2004) where there is a subscription form and an online order form.

Materials Needed

Secondary Teaching Supplies Needed

The chemistry teacher at Skapiskis Secondary School in Skapiskis, Lithuania is in dire need of some simple teaching supplies, such as test tubes and other simple laboratory supplies, for use in grades 7–12. The school’s equipment is out of date, but their budget is not sufficient to supply all needs. ACS Project Bookshare has previously donated publications in English.

Supplies may be sent to Skapiskis Secondary School, Chemistry Department, Attn.: Mrs. Audrone Liudvinaviciene, Mokyklos 5, Skapiskis LT-40464, Kuppiskio raj., Lithuania. Email correspondence should go to Tomas Samoska.
