Explain the observation that high molecular weight alcohols such as 1-decanol (bp 228°) have boiling points similar to those of hydrocarbons of related molecular weight (undecane, bp 196°), whereas low molecular weight alcohols such as ethanol (bp 78°) are much higher boiling than their equivalent hydrocarbons (propane, bp –42°).
