JCE QBank Physical Chemistry Collections
The physical chemistry collections include questions generally suitable for upper-level physical chemistry courses.

Answers to some questions in JCE QBank are available to chemistry teachers (but not students). To find how to get answers, click the Answers to Questions link at the right.

We encourage you to contribute more questions to any of the JCE QBank collections, or to contribute one or more entire collections of questions. To learn more about contributing, click on the Contribute link at the right.

Quantum States Questions
These questions are designed to accompany Quantum States of Atoms and Molecules, a JCE Living Textbook in physical chemistry. The collection consists of approximately 900 questions which were developed and tested by Erica Harvey who teaches at Fairmont State University in West Virginia, and reviewed and tested by Theresa Julia Zielinski at Monmouth University in New Jersey.

The questions are grouped into chapters to support the Quantum States text. The questions, designed to be used with a course management system such as WebCT or Desire-to-Learn, were written to provide an assessment tool that measures concepts learned from each chapter. The questions, primarily in multiple choice format, were designed to be used as an outcomes based assessment tool. In this case students were permitted to take short, 10 or so question, timed quizzes multiple times until they achieved a reassigned score of 90 to 100%. Students were allowed to use the Quantum States book and other resources while they took these quizzes. The objective was to increase student time on task while studying quantum chemistry.

Even with book in hand students needed two or more attempts to gain the reassigned score. This demonstrates that the questions are a mix of recall and critical thinking types, testing at the knowledge, comprehension, and application stages of Bloom's taxonomy.

The questions in this data base can also be used to create in class multiple choice exams to compliment problem solving questions developed by local instructors. The following link brings you to the chapter layout for this collection of questions.

JCE Digital Library

DigiDemos
Chemical demonstrations done digitally using video, sound, graphics, and hypertext. This collection will enable teachers to learn and to share what they have learned about the most effective demonstration techniques, the latest important safety and waste disposal information, and exemplary pedagogy involving demonstrations.

WebWare
WWW-deliverable animations, simulations, calculations, and other pedagogically useful items that can be incorporated into classroom presentations, can promote discussion and interaction among students, and can provide new insights through graphic and other non-traditional means.

SymMath
A collection of Mathcad®, Mathematica®, Maple®, or MATLAB® documents designed to help students learn mathematically intensive aspects of chemistry.
