Computing Liquid–Vapor Phase Diagrams for Non-Ideal Binary Mixtures

Franklin M. C. Chen
Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Green Bay, WI 54311-7001

Abstract

This Mathcad worksheet is intended to help students learn about determining vapor–liquid phase diagrams for ideal and non-ideal binary mixtures. The document starts with a brief review of chemical potential, activities, and the two component phase rule. The first task for students is to construct a binary boiling point diagram for the benzene-toluene pair of liquids. Seventeen exercises guide the students as they learn the thermodynamics concepts of activity and activity coefficients as related to boiling point phase diagrams. van Laar's theory is used to calculate solvent and solute's activity coefficients for non-ideal mixtures. The document concludes with construction of a binary phase boiling point diagram for a pair of liquids that form a non-ideal solution.
