The demonstration on this page shows a dangerous situation that should be avoided by undergraduate chemistry laboratory students.

Discussion

Loose clothing, hair, or jewelry can become tangled in equipment such a centrifuge, possibly resulting in injury.

When using a centrifuge:

  1. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
  2. Set the centrifuge on a flat level surface.
  3. NEVER stop a spinning centrifuge with your hand.
  4. ALWAYS make sure the centrifuge is balanced.
  5. NEVER leave an operating centrifuge unattended.
