| Reaction of Iodine with Chlorine |
Discussion
Solid iodine I2 is poured into a heated crystallizing dish to which gas ports have been added.
The dish is heated to facilitate sublimation of the iodine, which forms violet vapor. The top of the dish is vacuum sealed and a vacuum is drawn.
A needle connected to a pressurized source of chlorine gas is inserted into one of the ports. The valve is opened, chlorine is introduced, and the reaction proceeds. At the end, the solid product is shown.
