Wave Damping

Energy losses, called "damping," cause a wave to die away.

Discussion

Friction between the table top and the Slinky™ causes the amplitude of the wave pulse to diminish as it moves along the table top. This loss of wave energy is called "damping." All mechanical waves lose energy through dissipative interactions with the medium in which they travel.
