The Acid-Base Package is a versatile, comprehensive set of programs that will be useful to students and teachers in any course that deals quantitatively with acid-base equilibria. A few examples will illustrate the breadth of applications this package enables. In high school and introductory college courses FABTIC and CURVPLOT can be used to illustrate a variety of titration curves through classroom projection (1). Students in general chemistry and introductory analytical courses can use PHCAL to check the results of calculations, SEARCH to find acids or bases that have certain characteristics, ALPHA to determine species distributions, and BUFFPREP to choose appropriate buffer systems. A general-purpose plotting program like CURVPLOT can be used in any course where graphs need to be drawn. Clearly many of these programs will be useful to teachers as well--for generating test questions or designing lab experiments. BUFFPREP will be useful to anyone whose research requires selection of buffer systems for specific pH values. Hardware and Software Requirements
The Acid-Base Package runs under MS-DOS or IBM PC DOS version 3.0 or higher. It is supplied on 5.25-in. disks but can be used on a computer with either two 5.25-in. disk drives or two 3.5-in. disk drives or on a computer with a hard disk. At least 512K RAM is required. ALPHA and CURVPLOT require a graphics adapter (CGA, EGA or VGA). The program detects the type of graphics adapter available and utilized the highest possible resolution. In some cases one may wish to have a graphics printer to print titration curves or species distribution plots, but all programs will run without a printer.
