Note:
This issue is out of print.
Kersey Black's "Proton NMR Spectrum Simulator" provides a very flexible tool that students can use to learn about interpretation of NMR spectra. It complements instrument simulators, such as that by Schatz (1), spectrum generators, such as Hiatt's (2), and tutorials, such as that by Smith (3). By allowing quick and convenient entry for organic structures and then quickly generating spectra, the program allows students to test their interpretive skills on a wide variety of spectra, and hence to develop and hone those skills. In addition, this issue contains two notes: a continuation of the index files for the Journal of Chemical Education that began to appear in the previous Macintosh issue and a corrigendum to "The Periodic Table Stack" (4), which was the main program in that issue. The corrigendum corrects a problem that occurred in selecting which videodisc player "The Periodic Table Stack" would control; it can be simply copied from this issue's disks to those for the previous issue. The extension of the Journal index files will allow HyperCard searches that extend farther into the past and should be useful to anyone who is interested in researching specific topics that have appeared in the Journal.
Hardware and Software Requirements
"Proton NMR Spectrum Simulator" requires a Macintosh 512Ke, Plus, SE or II. The latest version of the Macintosh system software is recommended, although system version 5.x or higher is sufficient. For those who wish to use the software for class presentations, a large monitor or projection panel for the Macintosh will be needed. Several such monitors and panels are available (5).
