How to Use These Programs Solid State Structures for MacMolecule provides an excellent companion to the ICE Solid-State Model Kit. Ludy Mayer's MacMolecule renderings of solid-state models can be used quite effectively in lecture presentations because they take no time to build and are easily manipulated. The computer structures are also useful when groups of students are building solid-state models with the kit, because they can be used to verify the correctness of constructed models. In addition, the computerized version has features that are not available in the kit. Models can be viewed as ball-and-stick as well as space filling, so that atoms within a structure become visible. Sticks can also be used to good advantage to connect nearest neighbors and show coordination numbers and geometries. Anyone who wants students to gain a better understanding of the three-dimensional structures of solids will benefit from the combination of kit and MacMolecule structures.
Organic Nomenclature provides drill and practice that is useful in any chemistry course where names of simple organic compounds are introduced, including high school, introductory college chemistry, and organic chemistry. The problems included are typical of those encountered in an introduction to organic chemistry.
Atomic Spectra-Graph provides an alternative method of graphically displaying emission spectra of the elements. It produces images that are appropriate for display of emission spectra in the classroom or for incorporation into reports where appropriate.
Hardware and Software Requirements
Software in Series C of JCE: Software requires an Apple Macintosh computer (Macintosh Plus, SE or SE/30, Classic or Classic II, any Macintosh II, Centris, Quadra, PowerBook, or PowerMac) with a hard disk drive and an 800 K or SuperDrive floppy disk drive. System Software version 6.0.7 or later is also required. If you are running System 7 or MultiFinder, at least 2 MB RAM is required. A Macintosh compatible printer is optional.
In addition to the hardware and software requirements listed above, Solid State Structures for MacMolecule requires a 68020 or greater microprocessor and a math coprocessor. If you are not using System 7, 32-bit Color QuickDraw system extension is required. Although not strictly a requirement, a 256 or higher color display is strongly recommended. Organic Nomenclature requires HyperCard or HyperCard Player version 2.1 or greater. Atomic Spectra-Graph requires Microsoft Excel version 3.0 or later. Solid State Structures for MacMolecule requires 1.4 MB of free disk space; Organic Nomenclature requires 0.7 MB of free disk space (not including HyperCard), and Atomic Spectra-Graph requires 0.9 MB of free disk space (not including Microsoft Excel).
All three programs in this issue are compatible with System 7.
