This issue is out of print.
Thoughout the ten-year history of JCE Software, we have struggled with the model we use for publication (see Holmes, J. L. "JCE Software: Periodical Publication or Software Publisher", J. Chem. Educ. Software 1997, 9C, 1). As a publication of JCE, we made several concessions to the periodical model of publication. Experience has shown us that some aspects of this model run contrary to the expectations of software users. One other aspect of this model remains consistent: we can only publish what is submitted to us. To better accommodate our users' expectations and our current submissions trend we have adopted the changes outlined below.
The number and type of submissions we are receiving has changed significantly. Many submissions that we now receive (especially those developed on the Mac OS) can be delivered on both Windows and Mac OS, a trend that we like. Many of you now have heterogeneous computing environments where computer ÒcoursewareÓ needs to be available on both Windows and Mac OS. Given these circumstances, we are changing regular issue designations from Series C and D to sequentially numbered issues with W and/or M suffixes. Instead of offering separate issues for Windows and Mac OS versions of the same program, we will include both versions in the same issue. Therefore, this issue marks the end of an era for JCE Software; this is the last issue that we will publish in Series D.
Our past practice of bundling more than one program into an issue is also changing. The next issues that we publish will contain only one program. This enables us to publish programs when they are ready and not delay them while we wait for other programs in an issue. As a user, you will get (and pay for) only the program that you need. This policy parallels many of our users' expectations and we think it will be a popular change.
Several of our submissions cannot be distributed on floppy disk because of their size. Such submissions will be distributed on CD-ROM. In the past we have designated our CD-ROM titles as Special Issues. Although we still plan to publish Special Issues, the CD-ROM medium can no longer be called special by virtue of its delivery medium alone. The Special Issue series has been reserved for those titles that have special hardware or software requirements and CD-ROM drives no longer fit this criterion. Look for regular issues to be distributed on CD-ROM, as was issue 8C, 1.
Series B for MS-DOS compatible computers has been discontinued. Issue 10B, 2 will mark the end of 10 years of MS-DOS software and the end of Series B for MS-DOS-compatibles. We will continue to sell and support the Series B issues we have already published. Should suitable MS-DOS programs be submitted that run under Windows, we will publish them with the W suffix. Such submissions will no longer be encouraged.
We hope that you, our subscribers, find these changes to better fit your needs and desires. If not, or you have other suggestions, I would very much like to hear them. As always you can contact me via email at jlholmes@chem.wisc.edu.
