"The World of Chemistry: Selected Demonstrations and Animations I" is a special issue of JCE: Software with a selection of demonstrations and animations taken from the video component of The World of Chemistry telecourse. The original series of video provides a new dimension to the teaching of chemistry by the extensive use of four main production elements: demonstrations, animation, interviews, and real-life stories. The video serves as the vehicle to transport the student upon alternate roads--avenues which cannot be explored otherwise from within the classroom situation.
This videodisc has been designed so that a variety of demonstrations - the macro world of chemistry - are followed by animations that carry the learner to the molecular world. By exposing the students to both facets of chemistry - the macro and micro worlds - we believe that the student may conceptualize more easily and overcome at least some of the misconceptions commonly held and improve their ability to move back and forth between the two.

In this videodisc, we have compiled segments by subject areas basic to general chemistry courses. Subject areas include: states of matter, measurement, atomic structure, the periodic table, molecular structure, introduction to thermodynamics, electrochemistry, molecular structure, and acids and bases. Most of the demonstrations are followed by molecular animation, but some demonstrations and animated segments can be used independently.
Video segments included on this disk are:
Side One
- Mercury Determination Using a Spectrophotometer - Accuracy and Precision
- Experimenting with Gas Pressure I
- Experimenting with Gas Pressure II
- Effect of Temperature on Pressure
- Experimenting with Gas Pressure III
- Liquid Nitrogen and Racquet Balls
- Changes of State In Bromine
- Experimenting with Electrical Charges
- The Rutherford Experiment
- Similarities and Trends in Groups I - Noble Gases
- Similarities and Trends in Groups II - Alkali Metals
- Energy States and a Sound Wave Analogy
Side Two
- Energy States and Chlorophyll
- A Generic Spectroscopic Instrument
- The Mole - From Counting to Weighing
- Blowing Balloons with Moles of Hydrogen
- Water and Ice
- A Solution with Water
- Alcohol Dissolves in Water
- Water and Oil
- An Exothermic Reaction
- An Endothermic Reaction
- Activation Energy
- Copper-Zinc Electrochemical Cell
- Water Surface Tension
- Color Indicators and Dry Ice
The videodisc medium obviates concerns that normally accompany demonstrations: safety, availability and disposal of reagents, cost and time of constructing apparatus, and visibility of the presentations to all members of the class.
Hardware and Software Requirements
"The World of Chemistry: Selected Demonstrations and Animations I" is a 12-in., double-sided, 60-minute, CAV-type videodisc. It may be operated from any videodisc player using the handheld remote-control keypad and entering a frame number from the Video Image Directory provided and then playing the video sequence that begins with that frame.
To make the video presentation visible to students in a classroom either a large-screen color monitor or a color video projection unit will be needed. The size of the monitor (or the need for a projection unit) depends on the size of the class to which the presentation will be made.
Note: This disc complies with NTSC standards and thus is incompatible with the PAL standard used on the videodisc players in many European countries.
