The Index to the Journal of Chemical Education allows you to do computerized searching of references to articles in the Journal of Chemical Education from its inception in 1924 through December 1992. The Index is available for two popular computer types: the Apple Macintosh (using HyperCard stacks) and IBM PC/PC-compatibles (using Toolbook/Windows). The Macintosh and Windows versions look and perform the same. You will find it is easy to edit the Index to fit your personal needs. However, for situations such as libraries and resource rooms, where editing would be inappropriate, it can be disabled.

As shown in the figure, each HyperCard card or Toolbook page contains information associated with a single reference: the title of the article, the authors, the volume, the year of publication, and the page. This information has been taken directly from the printed JOURNAL indexes. There are also fields for keywords and comments, into which you can enter whatever information suits your needs.

To parallel the existing and forthcoming printed indexes to the JOURNAL, the Index has been divided as follows:

  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 1-25, 1924-48
  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 26-35, 1949-58
  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 36-45, 1959-68
  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 46-55, 1969-78
  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 56-65, 1979-88
  • J. Chem. Educ., Vol. 66-69, 1989-92

Simple searching tools have been incorporated that allow you to search for words and names in a chosen field or in all fields. The results of these searches may be added to a log, and this log can be passed from one session to the next. Search results can also be combined with those of a previous search. The log can be printed, saved as a text file, and copied to the clipboard. The text file can be opened and edited with any word processing software, facilitating assembly of research materials.

It is easy to apply a keyword to a reference. Select any of a standard set of keywords from the Keywords menu, or type directly into the Keywords field. Additional keywords can also be added to the Keyword menu.

The Comments field allows you to personalize the Index by making your own notes about a particular reference or a particular search. Any of the references in the log can be copied and pasted into a document you are creating with word processing or other software. On-line help screens are always available and are accessible from the menu bar. The programs use the standard interfaces of HyperCard and Toolbook, enabling intuitive navigation.

Text files containing the information that was used to create the Index are included. These text files are in a standard format that can be imported into most databases and spreadsheets.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The Macintosh version requires an Apple Macintosh with a hard disk drive and HyperCard. Macintosh computers running under System Software version 6 without MultiFinder must have at least 1 MB of memory, System Software version 6.0.5 or later, and HyperCard 2.0 or later. Macintoshes using System 7 or System 6 with MultiFinder require a minimum of 2 MB of memory and HyperCard version 2.1 or later. Installation of the entire Index requires ~6 MB of free hard disk space.

The Windows/IBM PC version requires Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or later and associated hardware as defined by Microsoft. We recommend an IBM-PC/AT, PS/2, or compatible computer with a 80386 or higher processor, a minimum of 4 MB of memory, a hard disk, one floppy disk drive to install the software, and a Windows-compatible graphics card, such as an IBM VGA or a Super VGA adapter with a compatible color monitor, and a mouse. DOS version 5.0 or later is highly recommended. (Run-time Toolbook is included with this issue; Toolbook software is not required.) Installation of the entire Index requires ~12 MB of free hard disk space.
