If double-clicking a ToolBook (*.TBK) file icon in the Windows Explorer results
in an error message, consult TBPROBLEMS.wri on the Crystallography Collection CD-ROM, or see ToolBook Installation Issues below.
If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, the buttons in the Crystallographic CourseWare Main Menu that lead to other ToolBook files may not work properly. This appears to be due to a problem with recognition of long file names. There are two ways you can work around this problem:
- On the Main Menu page, select Open from the File menu, then select any ToolBook file listed in the dialog that appears. From that ToolBook file, return to the Main Menu and all buttons should now work properly. You will have to repeat this process each time you open Crystallographic CourseWare.
- Move the CCW2000 folder and all of its contents from its default location (C:\Program Files\JCE Software\Crystalography Collection\CCW2000) to a different location that does not include any long file names (for example C:\CCW2000). You will need to redirect the shortcuts in the Start menu to locate Crystallographic CourseWare in its new location. All buttons in the Main Menu should now operate properly.
TOOLBOOK INSTALLATION ISSUES:
The programs in the the Crystallography Collection require ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files in order to run. This is the only version of ToolBook runtime files that will fully support the programs in the Crystallography Collection. Older versions of ToolBook runtime files will not support the programs in the Crystallography Collection at all. Newer versions of ToolBook runtime files and all versions of ToolBook II Neuron will support most, but not all, of the programs in the Crystallography Collection. For this reason, the Crystallography Collection Setup program will not install the Crystallography Collection onto your computer until it is able to detect ToolBook II 6.1 runtime files on your computer.
If you believe that the Crystallography Collection Setup incorrectly indicated that you did not have ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files located on your computer:
The Crystallography Collection Setup performs a thorough check of your computer's hard drive(s) in order to locate any installed versions of ToolBook runtime files. If ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files are not detected on your computer, the Crystallography Collection Setup will force you to exit the setup. If you believe that the Crystallography Collection Setup has incorrectly identified any versions of ToolBook on your computer, you may view the results of the Crystallography Collection Setup's search. The results of the search are written to a text file on your computer at the location
C:\Program Files\JCE Software\Crystallography Collection\TBResult.txt
This file lists each version of ToolBook found on your computer along with the file path that it was found on. You do not have to complete the Crystallography Collection Setup in order to view this file. It is written to your hard drive as soon as the Crystallography Collection Setup has searched your computer for ToolBook runtime files.
If ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files are not listed in this file but you are certain that they exist on your computer, try uninstalling the ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files and reinstalling them from the installer on the CD
X:\Install\Toolbook\tb65rt.exe, where X is the letter name of your CD drive.
The following directions describe how to uninstall ToolBook.
1. Click the Start menu button at the lower left hand side of your screen. Select Settings.
2. From the Settings menu select Control Panel.
3. From the Control Panel window, double click Add/Remove Programs. A window titled Add/Remove Program Properties will appear.
4. From the Add/Remove Program Properties window, select the Install/Uninstall tab. A list of programs on your computer will appear.
5. Scroll down the list of programs and select ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files.
6. With ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files selected, click the Add/Remove button. You will be asked if you are sure that you want to uninstall the program. Answer yes.
7. Not all of the ToolBook 6.1 Runtime Files will be removed from your computer. You may remove the rest of the files manually, but this is optional.
Once this is completed, you may reinstall the ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files.
If the ToolBook (.tbk) files in the Crystallography Collection do not launch properly:
The ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files Installer has a number of problems associated with it. It may incorrectly assign file association values for ToolBook (.tbk) files, and some of the files that it installs will not function properly when Internet Explorer Version 5.0 or above is present on your computer. The Crystallography Collection Setup program corrects these errors by detecting and correcting any incorrect ToolBook (.tbk) file associations, and by copying newer versions of certain ToolBook system files to the ToolBook system folder on your computer. In order for the Crystallography Collection Setup to be able to correct these errors, the ToolBook II Runtime Files must be installed on your computer prior to running the Crystallography Collection Setup program. This is the reason why the Crystallography Collection Setup will force you to exit if ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files are not detected on your computer.
You may experience problems launching ToolBook (.tbk) files if you reinstall the ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files after the Crystallography Collection has been installed on your computer. Reinstalling ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files may incorrectly assign ToolBook (.tbk) file associations, or it may replace newer versions of vital ToolBook files with older ones that do not function properly. If this situation arises, your best option is to uninstall and reinstall the Crystallography Collection. If you do not want to do this, follow the directions below to correct the problems.
1. Locate the ToolBook System folder on your computer. The default location is
C:\Program Files\Asymetrix\Shared Files\TBSystem
2. Copy all of the files from the TBSystem folder on the Crystallography Collection CD into the ToolBook System folder on your computer. Answer yes when asked if you want to overwrite files.
3. From the Windows Explorer click on the View dropdown menu on the top toolbar.
4. On the dropdown menu, select Options... A new window labeled Options will appear.
5. In the Options window, select the File Types tab. A list of Registered file types will appear.
6. Scroll through the list of Registered file types and select ToolBook II Book.
7. With ToolBook II Book selected on the list of Registered file types, click Edit. A window labeled Edit File Type will appear.
8. In the Edit File Type window, examine the Actions: dialog box. If there is more than one entry in this box, your ToolBook (.tbk) file association may need to be changed.
9. In the Actions: dialog box, select Open or Open in ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files. Only one of these options will be present in the Actions: dialog box.
10. With Open or Open in ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files selected, click on Set Default. This sets ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files as the default program for ToolBook (.tbk) files.
11. Click OK, and close all other windows.
12. Repeat steps 3 through 11, selecting ToolBook II System Book from the list of Registered file types instead of ToolBook II Book.
If ToolBook (.tbk) files still do not launch properly, consult the following website:
http://home.click2learn.com/support/
From this website you can seek information about ToolBook or ToolBook Neuron, or you can download different versions of either the ToolBook runtime files or Neuron. However, you must remember that the ToolBook II 6.1 Runtime Files are the only ToolBook Runtime files that will fully support all of the ToolBook files included in the Crystallography Collection.
