General Questions

Will all the programs on the CD run on both Macintosh and Windows?

No. Some programs are available for both Mac OS and Windows, but most are for only one or the other.

See Contents for a list of programs included in the collection with links to descriptions of each program.

Windows Questions
How do I install the CD?

Detailed installation instructions are found in the ReadMe.wri file at the root level of the CD-ROM.

Why do icons in the Windows Start menu installed by previous editions of General Chemistry Collection not work with the 4th Edition?

Although most of the programs are the same, the icons installed by the previous Edition installers do not work with the 4th Edition CD because the program locations are not the same. If you are no longer using the previous edition you should uninstall its parts. The 3rd Edition includes an Uninstall item that you can run to uninstall it automatically. For the 2nd Edition CD, you should uninstall its parts as follows:
1. Open My Computer by double-clicking, then open your C: hard drive. You should see a folder named "JCE-Soft". Drag this folder into the Recycle Bin. Answer Yes to All in any dialogs that appear.
2. Right-click the mouse on the program bar at the bottom of your screen and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. Click the Start Menu Programs tab and then the Remove... button. Find and select the "JCE DOS Software" folder and click Remove. Answer Yes to any dialogs that appear. Do the same for the "JCE Software Docs", "JCE Software WiscQuizzes", and "JCE Windows Software" folders. Empty the Recycle Bin.

After installing the 4th Edition, the program Inqual-S will not run. An error message indicates that "COMCT232.OCX' not correctly registered: file is missing. How can I run this program?

There is an error in the SP 16 Setup program. The file COMCT232.OCX should be installed during setup, but is not. The problem will be corrected for the next edition of the General Chemistry Collection. In the mean time, you will find a copy of this file on the General Chemistry Collection CD-ROM inside the InQualS folder. Simply drag the file icon to the Windows\System directory. The file will be copied. InQual-S should now run properly.

Mac Questions

Where can I get a copy of HyperCard Player?

Several of the programs on the CD require HyperCard or HyperCard Player. A copy of HyperCard Player is usually included on the System CD-ROM that came with your computer. Look for it in the CD Extras folder. HyperCard Player can also be downloaded from Apple Computer at http://asu.info.apple.com. Search for HyperCard.

Why does HyperCard Player open so slowly?

If you are using System 8.6 and have installed the Font Manager Update extension, HyperCard stacks and applications may run very slowly. To solve this problem, disable the Font Manager Update extension and restart your computer before attempting to run HyperCard stacks or applications.

Why is there only one item in the Inorganic Nomenclature menu?

The Inorganic Nomenclature menu should contain two items. If you are using Mac OS 9 or higher, you may see only one because of a change in the way that the font used in the menu is displayed. Inorganic Nomenclature will be updated in the next edition of General Chemistry Collection.
