Windows Programs
Problem Cause Solution
When using Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 2 or later under Windows, QuickTime movies do not load properly. Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 2 and later versions no longer support Netscape-type plug-ins such as QuickTime and now require an ActiveX control. Download and install the ActiveX version of the QuickTime plug-in from Apple Computer. More information about the problem is available at http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/

After installing Lessons for Introductory Chemistry, the program does not start up properly. The problem is most likely that duplicate copies of several files have been installed and are interfering with the program startup. IT looks for the five files listed below (in the Solution section) on a specific search path. It starts by looking in the directory where the program is located (the Lessons for Introductory Chemistry program folder), and ends by looking in the Windows System directory. It is designed to automatically exit if it finds multiple copies of any of these files. The programmer who wrote our Setup program for General Chemistry Collection 5th Edition did not realize this problem as it was not documented by the author and did not occur on any of our test computers. The Setup program places the five files in the Lessons for Introductory Chemistry program folder and as a result, if the program is installed on a computer that already has one or more of these files in the Windows System directory, Lessons for Introductory Chemistry will not start.

1. Locate the files for Lessons in Introductory Chemistry installed on your hard drive. The default installation path for these files is C:\Program Files\JCE Software\General Chemistry Collection\Lessons for Introductory Chemistry. If you installed the General Chemistry Collection to another location on your computer, you should first locate the Lessons for Introductory Chemistry program folder on your computer.

2. In the program folder there are five files that should be removed:

  • Wing.dll
  • Wing32.dll
  • Wingde.dll
  • Wingdib.drv
  • Wingpal.wnd

These files may be hidden. If you do not see them in the Lessons for Introductory Chemistry program folder, select the View menu at the top of the window and select Options from of this menu.ÊA window titled Options will open. In this window, select the View tab, and then select the Show All Files option. When you close the window, all hidden files will be visible.

Select the five files delete them.

3. Next open your Windows System folder (C:\Windows\System\) , and make sure the five files listed above are present in this folder. If they are there, try running the Lesson for Introductory Chemistry program again.

If any of the five files are not present, download and extract the contents of wing.zip into your Window System folder. (You will need a utility such as WinZip to expand the file.) If you are asked whether you want to overwrite any files that already exist in this directory, say no. This zip file contains the latest versions of the five files, plus one additional file. These files are specific to the program used to run Lessons in Introductory Chemistry, so overwriting them in your Windows System directory should not affect any other programs. However, just to be on the safe side, do not overwrite any files.

We are receiving a printer error when trying to print from Lake Study and then get a program error when exiting the application. The printing error is due to a problem with the graphic of the authors signature near the end of Lake Study's Introductory message. All other Lake Study Screens that can be printed print correctly. The temporary workaround is simply not to print the Introduction. JCE Software does not know when a revision might be available.

Macintosh Programs
Problem Cause Solution
There only one item in the Inorganic Nomenclature menu when the program is run with Mac OS 9 or higher. The font used in the menu is displayed differently in Mac OS 9 and above than in older versions of the system software. The space provided for the menu can only display one of the options available. Only one option appears, but both are actually still available. In order to select the first option, 1. Formula to Compound Name click the top row of text in the menu, 1. Formula to Compound. In order to select the second option, 2. Compound Name to Formula, which is not visible in the menu, click the second row of text, Name.
