SIRs and Lessons in Introductory Chemistry do not start from the Start menu shortcuts when installed on a computer running Windows 2000.
An error in the General Chemistry Collection Setup Program causes five system files required by both SIRs and Lessons in Introductory Chemistry to be installed in the System32 directory, but the programs require that they be located in the System directory.
Open the C:\WINNT\system32 directory. Locate the following files:
Copy these files into the C:\WINNT\system directory. Delete them from the C:\WINNT\system32 directory.
Both SIRs and Lessons in Introductory Chemistry should now start properly. This problem will be corrected in the next edition of General Chemistry Collection.
In SIRs, when the TORRICELLI VACUUM option is selected in SIR TORR, an execution error occurs.
There is an error in the program.
Click the "Yes" button in the Execution Error dialog to restart SIRs. Refer to the User's Guide if you need assistance in using the TORRICELLI VACUUM. This problem will be corrected in the next edition of the General Chemistry Collection.
We are receiving a printer error when trying to print from Lake Study and then get a program error when exiting the application.
The printing error is due to a problem with the graphic of the authors signature near the end of Lake Study's Introductory message.
All other Lake Study Screens that can be printed print correctly. The temporary workaround is simply not to print the Introduction. JCE Software does not know when a revision might be available.
In SIR React and SIR K, I have tried to enter my own reaction equations, but without success. I type in the equation and press Enter (or click on the Enter icon on the screen), but the equation is simply deleted from the screen.
The Setup program installs an icon that allows you to run SIRs from the General Chemistry Collection CD-ROM. SIRs cannot save the equation you entered because it cannot update the file on the CD-ROM.
In order to enter your own equations you will need to do the following:
Copy the SIRs folder and its contents from the General Chemistry Collection CD to your hard drive.
Because files from a CD are copied as "read only", you will need to open the SIRs folder on your hard drive, select the file for the SIR in which you want to enter a new equation, click the right mouse button, select "Properties" from the pop-up menu, and then click the check box in front of "Read-only" to remove the check mark. Three SIRs offer the option of entering a new equation, SIR K (WSIRKAY.BIN), SIR React (WSREACT.BIN), and Sir Dalton (WSIRDALT.BIN).
Start SIRs by opening the copy of WSIRS.BIN on your hard drive with Tcrun.exe.
Please note that unless you change the association manually, the SIRs icon in the Windows Start menu will continue to open the copy of SIRs on the CD, not the copy on your hard drive.
This problem will be corrected in the next annual edition of SIRs.
There only one item in the Inorganic Nomenclature menu when the program is run with Mac OS 9 or higher.
The font used in the menu is displayed differently in Mac OS 9 and above than in older versions of the system software. The space provided for the menu can only display one of the options available.
Only one option appears, but both are actually still available. In order to select the first option, 1. Formula to Compound Name click the top row of text in the menu, 1. Formula to Compound. In order to select the second option, 2. Compound Name to Formula, which is not visible in the menu, click the second row of text, Name.
