Student Version

Hardware and Software Requirements: Windows or Macintosh
Installation Instructions: Windows or Macintosh

Welcome to the JCE Software General Chemistry Collection for Students. This CD-ROM allows you to work with General Chemistry programs on your home Macintosh, without requiring travel to a computer lab or connection to the campus network.

About This Issue

Documentation for individual programs on this CD will generally be provided in class by your professor or TA, in the form of class worksheets and handout packets. There are also directions on the use of the programs on the CD in the Documentation folder in the form of Adobe Acrobat files. To view these files you must have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader (included on the CD in the Installation folder) on your computer (see below).

About the CD

This collection is provided on a Windows- and Macintosh- compatible CD-ROM. Some Windows files on the CD are in compressed form and must be installed before you can use the software. The Windows setup program arranges program groups and icons to run the programs. Installation instructions are given below.

Before You Begin

Before you begin to use this issue of JCE Software, you should take the following preliminary steps.

Verify that you have the required hardware and software. The General Chemistry Collection for Students has the following hardware and software requirements:

Windows

- a Windows 3.1 or later compatible computer with an 80486 or greater microprocessor
- a minimum of 8 megabytes (MB) of random-access memory (RAM)
- SVGA or VGA graphics card compatible with Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later
- color monitor
- hard disk with 10 MB of free space

Macintosh

- a Macintosh compatible computer with an 68040 or greater microprocessor or Power Macintosh
- a minimum of 8 megabytes (MB) of random-access memory (RAM)
- color monitor
- CD-ROM drive

Excel

Two of the programs on the CD (Answer Sheets and Atomic Spectra-Graph) require Excel. Neither program can be used without Excel.

HyperCard

Several of the programs on the CD require HyperCard or HyperCard Player. You can obtain the most recent information about HyperCard including updates at http://www.apple.com/hypercard/. HyperCard Updates and HyperCard Player can also be downloaded from Apple Computer's Software Updates. Look for HyperCard under Macintosh Utilities.

Windows 95 Users

Certain DOS programs will not run properly (and can cause your system to lock up) under Windows 95 unless you make minor changes to their Properties settings. These programs are: Bravais, Cleave, HCC, Mass Spec, Notebook, Particle in a Box I and II, Salt, and X-ray Diffraction. To solve this problem:

1. Open the JCE DOS Software program group. The JCE DOS Software group can be
located by clicking on My Computer or running Explorer, and using 'Find' {Ctrl-F} to
find all files/folders named "JCE" - thereafter, double-click on the JCE DOS Software
item in the list.
2. Hold the right mouse button down while pointing at one of the program items in the
group, and select 'Properties' from the pop-up menu.
3. Click on the 'Memory' tab and change the 'Initial Environment' memory to 1024K. Click
'OK' to save the changes.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each program listed.

In addition, the QuickTime Plug-in version 1.1 or later for your WWW browser is required. Installers for QuickTime and Acrobat Reader are included on the CD. We recommend that you read the QuickTime README file in the QuickTime Installer folder and the ReadMe-Reader and ReadMe-Reader v. 3.01 files in the Reader folder inside the Acrobat Reader Installer folder before you proceed to install the software.
