The following problems have been reported to JCE Software. The cause and solution of each are given. For other questions asked about specific programs included in the General Chemistry collection, see the FAQ page. If you encounter a problem with the General Chemistry CD that is not listed here or on the FAQ page, please contact JCE Software.
Problem: Lake Study for Macintosh will not start up, or quits when I attempt to take a water sample.Cause: Lake Study has insufficient memory to run with the current monitor setting.
Solution: There are two ways to solve this problem:
- Decrease the number of colors your monitor displays from Millions to Thousands of Colors or 256 Colors. Lake Study's graphics were designed for 256 colors, and are not improved by higher color depth. If the control strip is installed, click the Monitor BitDepth icon (it looks like a monitor colored stripes on the screen) and select Thousands of Colors or 256 Colors from the pop-up menu. If you do not have a control strip, open your Monitors or Monitors & Sound control panel, then click Thousands or 256 in the Color Depth menu. Close the control panel. If the color depth does not change when you make the selection from the control strip or control panel (the screen will flash off briefly and return at the new setting), restart your Macintosh. After running Lake Study, you can return your color depth to Millions of Colors using the same method, if desired.
- Increase Lake Study's memory allocation. In order to do this, you must drag a copy of Lake Study to your hard drive. Click on the Lake Study icon one time to select it, then choose Get Info from the File menu. If you are using System 8 or higher, select Memory from the pop-up menu. In the Memory Requirements box, increase the Preferred Size from 3500 K to 6000 K. Close the Lake Study 1.1 Info window.
Problem: Chemistry Navigator will not launch properly. I get a dialog asking me to find a file.Cause: The first time you run Chemistry Navigator with a given version of HyperCard or HyperCard player, you must locate the first graphic. It is inside the Chemistry Navigator folder, in the Picts folder. Locating this graphic allows HyperCard to find all of the others needed.
Solution: When the dialog asking for the PICT file appears, navigate to the CD-ROM, the Chemistry Navigator folder, the Picts folder and then scroll down to the correct PICT file and click OK.
Problem: An error occurs when I attempt to install Illustrated Periodic Table (IPT) from the CD using the Custom installation option.Cause: This is a known problem due to an error made when the CD was written.
Solution: The error will be corrected in the next printing of the General Chemistry Collection. In the mean time, you will have to run IPT from the CD-ROM.
Problem: IPT does not start when its icon (IPT.EXE) is double-clicked, even after the system files have been installed with the Setup program.Cause: One of the DLL files needed to run the program was omitted from the CD.
Solution: The error will be corrected in the next printing of the CD. You can download a copy of the needed file MTB40lnl.DLL from JCE Software. After downloading the file, drag it to your Windows directory. IPT will now start when you double-click the IPT.EXE icon.
Problem: The Windows Start menu icons installed for Window on the Solid State using the custom installation setup program do not start the program.Cause: The path associated with the icons is incorrect.
Solution: Edit the path to point at the correct target using the following steps.
- Click the right mouse button one time on the Taskbar at the bottom of the Windows screen.
- Click Properties in the pop-up menu that appears.
- In the Taskbar Properties window, click the Start Menu Programs tab, then click the Advanced button.
- When the Start Menu Explorer window opens, double-click the Programs folder to open it. Then open the JCE Software folder, the General Chemistry Collection folder, and the Window on the Solid State folder. You should see four icons, one for each of the four parts of Window on the Solid State.
- Click the first icon (Part 1) with the right mouse button, then click Properties in the pop-up menu.
- Click the Shortcut tab if it is not already in front, then find the Target, the top text box. The Target should read:
"C:\Program Files\JCE Software\General Chemistry Collection\WinSS\TBook.exe C:\Program Files\JCE Software\General Chemistry Collection\WinSS\metals.tbk"
- Remove all the text starting at the second C: and continuing until the start of the file name. Insert a closing quotation mark after TBook.exe, and delete the final quotation mark following the file name. The Target should now read:
C:\Program Files\JCE Software\General Chemistry Collection\WinSS\TBook.exe" metals.tbk
- Click OK.
Repeat Steps 5, 6, 7, and 8 for each of the remaining three icon's Targets, being sure to use the appropriate file name for each. Close the Explorer window, Click the OK button in the Taskbar Properties window. Each part of Window on the Solid State will now open when you select its icon from the Windows Start menu.
