General Troubleshooting
Problem Cause Solution
When using Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 2 or later under Windows, QuickTime movies do not load properly. Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 2 and later versions no longer support Netscape-type plug-ins such as QuickTime and now require an ActiveX control. Download and install the ActiveX version of the QuickTime plug-in from Apple Computer. More information about the problem is available http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/.

Volume 1, 1st Edition
Problem Cause Solution
I am having problems installing QuickTime using the installer included on SP 18, Chemistry Comes Alive! Volume 1 CD. The installer file is not located where the Read Me file says it is, but I found it in the INSTALL folder. After I run QTEASY32.EXE, I see the following:

PKSFX:(W10)Warning! can't create:NPQTW32.dll

PKSFX:(W10)Warning! can't create:QT32INST.EXE

PKSFX:(W10)Warning! can't create:QTVRW32.QTC

(1)There is an error in the Read Me file.
(2)The program is trying to decompress itself at the location where it resides and cannot because it is on an unwritable medium, the CD.

(1) The problem has been corrected in the 2nd edition.

(2) JCE Software strongly recommends that you download and install the current version of QuickTime from Apple Computer . QuickTime 4 is compatible with all video in the Chemistry Comes Alive! series.

To use the version of QuickTime included on the CD (NOT RECOMMENDED):

Windows 98/95: You should have received with your Chemistry Comes Alive! CD a notice that tells you that you must copy the QTEASY32.EXE file to a temporary location on your hard disk before you run it. Once you have copied it to your hard disk and run it, you should then run the resulting QT32INST.EXE program to install QuickTime v. 2.1.2. You will also have to install the QuickTime plug-in by copying the file NPQTW32.EXE into your WWW browser's plug-ins directory.

Windows 3.1: Use the instructions above substituting 16 for 32 in every case.

I have installed QuickTime plug-in 1.1 in Netscape. But when I use Netscape to view "CCA", the movies cannot be displayed. I see the control bar and hear the sound for the movies, but the place where the video should be displayed is blank. If you are using Windows 95 or later, the error you are seeing is most likely due to QuickTime 3 being installed on your system. QuickTime 3 does not include support for the Indeo 3.2 video included on the Chemistry Comes Alive! CD. If you are using a Mac OS compatible computer, the error you are seeing is most likely due to not having installed the Indeo video extension. Update QuickTime to QuickTime 4. You can download the current version of QuickTime from Apple Computer. QuickTime 4 is compatible with all video in the Chemistry Comes Alive! series.

Windows:
You can install the version of QuickTime (v. 2.1.2) and the QuickTime plug-in (v1.1) on the Chemistry Comes Alive! CD. You do not have to remove QuickTime 3 from your system--QuickTime 3 and QuickTime 2.1.2 will coexist peacefully on the same computer. This is not recommended because the older version of QuickTime is not compatible QuickTime movies on Chemistry Comes Alive! Volumes numbered 3 or higher.

Mac OS:
Install the Indeo video extension. The installer is included in the Installation folder on the CD, and directions are in the Read Me First! file.
