General Question:Why does the QuickTime installer not work properly?

Answer: Some files required by the installer were inadvertently left off the disk. We apologize for this error. It is corrected in the 2nd Edition.

If QuickTime is not installed on your computer, you can download a free copy from Apple Computer's World Wide Web site at http://www.apple.com/quicktime.

Chemistry Navigator

The following problems with or questions about Chemistry Navigator, their causes, and solutions are discussed below.

Note to Owners of Volume 6C, Number 2
Problem Cause Solution
The text in Chemistry Navigator contains little squares and odd symbols. JCEChem font is not installed. Install JCEChem font. See the Installation file for instructions.

QuickTime video windows open, but are empty. The Indeo video extension is missing. Install Indeo video extension. See the Installation file for instructions.

Colored items (buttons, fields, or graphics) do not appear on the screen as shown in the figures in the Chemistry Navigator documentation, or they vanish during use. This problem has been observed when running Chemistry Navigator from the CD on some Macintosh computers. The cause is unknown. Quit the application and try running Chemistry Navigator again. Restarting your computer may help. If the problem persists, drag a copy of the Chemistry Navigator folder to your hard drive and run the application from there. You must copy the entire Chemistry Navigator folder from the CD. If you do not, the application will not be able to find needed program elements.

When I click on bold face text or make a selection from the Reactions menu, a dialog appears asking Where is (file name)?

•A version of Chemistry Navigator is running that is not compatible with Periodic Table Live! (See the note below.)

•Chemistry Navigator is running from your hard drive after being copied from the CD as described above, but the Periodic Table Live! CD is not in your CD drive.

•The Chemistry Navigator application has been copied to your hard drive, but not all of the files included in the Chemistry Navigator folder.

If you must run Chemistry Navigator from your hard drive, be sure that you have copied the entire Chemistry Navigator folder from the Periodic Table Live! CD, and that the Periodic Table Live! CD is in your CD drive.

Note: Only the version of Chemistry Navigator included in Special Issue 17 will access video from the Periodic Table Live! CD.

The original version of Chemistry Navigator (JCE Software Volume 6C, Number 2) can interact only with the Periodic Table Videodisc.

Note to Owners of Volume 6C, Number 2
If you own the original version of Chemistry Navigator, JCE Software Volume 6C, Number 2, you will not be able to use it to access video from the Periodic Table Live! CD. Unless you plan to use Chemistry Navigator to control the Periodic Table Videodisc, you can remove all the files in the old Chemistry Navigator folder and the font FEBTechnical from your hard drive.

Chemistry Navigator on Periodic Table Live! does not require HyperCard or HyperCard Player.

The Chemistry Navigator program included with this issue is only for use with the Periodic Table Live! CD. It cannot be used to control the Periodic Table Videodisc (JCE Software SP 1) or access video from Periodic Table CD (JCE Software SP 10).

Questions from Windows users

Illustrated Periodic Table

The following problems with or questions about Chemistry Navigator, their causes, and solutions are discussed below.

Problem Cause Solution
When starting Illustrate Periodic Table, the following error message appears: Could not open Excel. Excel is not installed on the computer. The Charting parameter in the IPT_PTL.INI file is set to TRUE. In IPT_PTL.INI, change the line Charting=TRUE to Charting=FALSE. IPT_PTL.INI is located in your Windows directory.

No Chart button appears on the screen, even though Exel is installed on the computer. The Charting parameter in the IPT_PTL.INI file is set to False. In IPT_PTL.INI, change the line Charting=FALSE to Charting=TRUE. IPT_PTL.INI is located in your Windows directory.

Windows 95/98: When I graph data, the charts that I get do not look right. The numbers on the axis labels look "squished". Windows 95/98 no longer includes the Windows 3.1.x System font, which is used by Periodic Table Live! for graph axes, some buttons, etc. Since the font is not included, a font substitution is done by Windows. Unfortunately, the substitution used causes the "squashed" numbers problem. You must provide a font substitution that works. The Windows font substitution record is kept in the WIN.INI file in the Windows directory. To fix this problem do the following:

Find the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory and open it with the Windows Notepad accessory (double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer will probably do this). Scroll through this file or use the Search function (Find... from the Search menu) to find the [Font Substitutes] section (begins with the line "[Font Substitutes]"). At the bottom of this section add the line "System=Arial Bold". This will substitute Arial Bold for the System font. Any TrueType font installed on your system will work, if you wish to experiment. Now save the file and restart Windows. The next time you run Periodic Table Live! you should no longer see "squashed" numbers.

Windows 3.1: When I graph data, the charts that I get do not look right. The numbers on the axis labels look "squished". This problem arises with some versions of Excel and is due to the size of the chart created in Excel. Illustrated Periodic Table sends commands to Excel to tell it to create a chart and copy it to the Windows clipboard. It then pastes the result into the space provided. If the chart is larger than the space provided, it is scaled to fit. This can result in scaling artifacts such as "squished numbers". We currently have no work around to this problem. However, you can view the chart using the Windows Clipboard Viewer accessory or by pasting it into a program that accepts Windows graphics files, such as the Windows Paint and Word Pad accessories or most word processors or graphic editing programs.

After selecting the data to be plotted, an empty plot window with labeled axis appears. Under Windows 95/98, file name extensions can be ignored and the Windows registry used to determine the relation between files and applications. The two files used for graphing in Excel by Periodic Table Live! are named KCDATA.XLS and KCDATA.XLM. When file name extensions are ignored, Excel does not differentiate between these two files. In the Windows 95/98 Explorer or a desktop Window choose the Options... item from the View menu. Click the View tab in the Options dialog. Check or turn on the "Display the full MS-DOS path in the title bar" option and uncheck or turn off the "Hide MS-DOS file extensions for files that are registered" option. Click the Apply button and then the OK button to dismiss the Option dialog.

The next time you start Periodic Table Live! you should see data plotted.

After using Illustrated Periodic Table, I can no longer restart or shut down my computer without "locking up" or getting a Windows system error.

While using Illustrated Periodic Table, I receive Windows system errors that require that I quit using the program.

These symptoms arise from a problem with ToolBook and QuickTime for Windows. The problem only manifests itself on some, not all, computers. Open a QuickTime movie using the Windows Media Player accessory program and leave it open while running Illustrated Periodic Table.:

Open the Media Player accessory. From the Windows 95 Start button, select Programs, Accessories, Multimedia, Media Player. From the Windows 3.1 Program Manager, double click the Media Player icon in the Accessories group window. Open a QuickTime movie. Select Open from the Media Player File menu. Open the file D:\PT_CD\CA\CA_AIR.MOV (This assumes that the Periodic Table Live! CD is in your D drive. If this is not the case, substitute for D the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive where the Periodic Table Live! CD resides. Minimize the Media Player program. Click the minimize button in the MediaPlayer window. Start Illustrate Periodic Table.

I have downloaded and installed QuickTime/QuickTime plug-in, but the movies are not displayed. I see the control bar, but the place where the video should be displayed is blank. The error you are seeing is most likely due to QuickTime 3 being installed on your system. QuickTime 3 does not include support for the Indeo 3.2 video included on the Periodic Table Live! CD. Windows 95: You must install the version of QuickTime (v. 2.1.2) and the QuickTime plug-in (v1.1) on the Periodic Table Live! CD in order to see its video. You do not have to remove QuickTime 3 from your system--QuickTime 3 and QuickTime 2.1.2 will coexist peacefully on the same computer.

Windows 98: If have installed QuickTime 3, uninstall it. Make sure that the QuickTime Plug-in is removed from the Internet Explorer Plugins folder. The Internet Explorer that came with your system can play the video without the installation of QuickTime, but will fail it QuickTime 3. for Windows is installed.

Installation on a Network
I have a network license and need to install Periodic Table Live! on a hard drive. How do I do this? JCE Software recommends that you run Illustrated Periodic Table (Windows) and Chemistry Navigator (Mac OS) from the Periodic Table Live! CD-ROM. However, network license holders may need to run the software from a hard drive. To do this you must copy the files for either program and the Periodic Table digital video to the computer's hard drive and make the adjustments necessary for the program to locate and play the video. The following instructions assume you are familiar with such processes as copying files, creating and naming folders or directories, and editing text. You will need approximately 300 MB of free space on your hard drive.

Windows 3.1 or Windows 95

1. Install QuickTime, Acrobat Reader (for documentation), and run the JCE Software Setup program as described in the Periodic Table Live! read me file, READ_PTL.WRI. Note that the icon or shortcut created by the setup program will run the program form the CD. You may edit its properties to point to the copy you install on your hard drive.

2. Create a directory for Periodic Table Live! on your hard drive, for example:
C:\PTLive
Note that this directory can be located on any drive or drive partition. If you have not used the C:\ drive, make a note of the location of the PTLive directory for later reference.

3. Copy the following directories and their contents from the Periodic Table Live! CD into the directory created in step 2:
IPT
PT_CD
DOCS (Optional--documentation may be helpful to users, but is not required)

4. Locate the Illustrated Periodic Table INI file, IPT_PTL.INI, in the Windows directory. Open the file in a text editor. You should see something like this (Charting and ExcelPath may vary):
;Initialization file for Illustrated Periodic Table

[IPT]
Videodisc=FALSE
PTVEdition2=FALSE
Mmotion=FALSE
Charting=TRUE
ExcelPath=C:\MSOFFICE\EXCEL\
DigitalVideo=TRUE
DVPath=D:\PT_CD\

4. Edit the last line of the file to specify the location of the digital video in the PT_CD directory inside the PTLive directory created in step 2, for this example:
DVPath=C:\PTLive\PT_CD\

5. Save the changes and close the file.

6. To verify that Illustrated Periodic Table can locate and play video, make sure the Periodic Table Live! CD is not mounted. Run Illustrated Periodic Table, IPT_PTL.EXE, located in the IPT directory inside the PTLive directory created in step 2.

Select an element, such as hydrogen. Click the Video button, and the button for one of the reactions. A movie window should open. If it does not, review the steps above. Make sure the path entered in step 4 is the correct path to the files on your hard drive.

Mac OS

1. Install QuickTime (if not already installed), Intel Indeo video extension, JCEChem font, and Acrobat Reader (for documentation) as directed in the Read Me First file.

2. Rename your hard drive, or a 300 MB or larger partition of your hard drive, PTLive. If File Sharing is on, you must turn it off before you can rename the hard drive.

3. Copy the following folders and their contents to the PTLive drive created in step 2.
Chemistry Navigator
PT_CD
Documentation (Optional--documentation may be helpful to users, but is not required.)
These folders must be at the root level of PTLive, not enclosed in any other folder.

4. To verify that Chemistry Navigator can locate and play video, make sure the Periodic Table Live! CD is not mounted. Open the Chemistry Navigator folder. Double-click the Chemistry Navigator icon to start the program.

Click About the Elements, then click hydrogen from the periodic table. From the Reactions menu select With Air. A movie window should open. If a dialog appears asking you to locate PTLIVE:PT_CD:H:H_AIR.MOV, click Cancel in the dialog, and in the dialog that follows. Quit Chemistry Navigator, and review the steps above. The files must be located exactly as above for Chemistry Navigator to locate them without assistance.
