JCE Internet Reviewer Guidelines
Acceptability of a manuscript for publication by JCE Internet depends on its applicability to our readers (content) and on its meeting standards of quality (presentation).

Content
A publishable manuscript should

  • include some essential element that cannot be readily reproduced in the print medium
    • animation, video, sound
    • interactivity, hyperlinked text, applets
    • online resources, data bases
  • have pedagogical content, showing at least one of the following
    • how the subject discussed would fit into the curriculum
    • how it might improve presentation of chemistry in classrooms, laboratories, textbooks, or other media
    • some other clearly stated pedagogical component
  • appeal to either
    • a general audience (the majority of our readers)
    • a clearly identifiable special audience (a specialized portion of our readers)
  • be useful to its intended audience
  • be original (not duplicate previously published material)
  • be accurate
  • include a thoroughly researched bibliography

Presentation
A publishable manuscript should

  • include a useful, accurate Abstract, suitable for publication in the Internet version of JCE
  • begin with a clear and concise Introduction, stating why a reader should take the time to read it
  • recognize and cite recent relevant publications, especially in JCE
  • be concise, of a length appropriate for its content and importance to chemical education
  • be written in clear and proper English, at a level suitable for its intended audience
  • contain only those figures and media elements necessary to illustrate the material
  • include media elements that convey the information most effectively
  • demonstrate cognizance of various media (Internet, software, video, etc.) that are available to JCE for its publication and suggest which would be most effective

Your comments should be aimed at helping the author improve the manuscript. Even if you think it should never appear in JCE, other reviewers' evaluations may lead the Editor to request a revision for possible publication. If the clearest way to comment is to mark the manuscript, feel free to do so. We might suggest the following method
  • Download the document source
  • Excerpt the relevent part of the article (copy and paste into email or review form)
  • Insert your comments within clearly marked delimiters

You may comment via email (to jceonline@chem.wisc.edu); of course, all identifiable headers and addresses will be removed before the review is forwarded to the author. We suggest the following format for your email review:
