This paper describes a laboratory exercise which has been implemented as one of approximately sixteen experiments in a course in analytical chemistry for second year engineering students. The experiment makes use of simple analytical probes interfaced to a PC through a Labworks (TM) interface unit, and associated software. The purpose of the exercise is to focus on factors involved in generating a signal and converting it to a meaningful analytical result. Included in the experiment are five procedures, each involving different types of signal generators and/or detectors and using a variety of ways of displaying and evaluating data. The exercise is structured to challenge students to think creatively and to encourage them to be innovative in how they work through the different sections.
