Metal Hydrides and the Dawn of the Atomic Age

Abstract
This paper describes the role of Metal Hydrides, Inc. (MHI) of Beverly, MA in supplying uranium metal to the Manhattan Project. The "hydrimet" process, developed at MHI, involved reduction of uranium oxide with calcium hydride. The specific reactions in the conversion of raw ore to pure metal are presented. The role of MHI in the success of Chicago Pile-1 and uranium recasting for Hanford, WA and Oak Ridge, TN are also developed. Finally the remediation and current status of the MHI site are documented.
