Critical Thinking in General Chemistry

Abstract
Although critical thinking is a student-trait most instructors in chemistry desire, many courses in chemistry do little to address this goal. This article suggests some reasons for student inability to analyze data, recognize assumptions, form hypotheses, ask probing questions, and demonstrate thinking critically in general. Exercises given to students to test and promote critical thinking reveal discouraging results. However, strategies to foster critical thinking (including feedback and collaborative learning) do improve student abilities.
