Abstract
The national ACS Convention for the spring 1996 is in New Orleans, a city unlike any other place in the United States. New Orleans passed through French, Spanish, and French (again) hands before becoming part of the United States as a portion of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Louisiana is the only state that was a French royal colony and therefore has a civil law based on Roman law, using the Napoleonic Code, rather than the Anglo-Saxon based law used by the rest of the country. This article provides an introduction to the the city of New Orleans and sites of scientific interest.
