The brilliantly colored fabric on this month’s cover was dyed by two compounds, each formed by a Grignard reaction. The experiment that introduces this staple reaction of the undergraduate organic laboratory in such a colorful way is presented by Taber, Meagley, and Supplee in "A Colorful Grignard Reaction: Preparation of the Triarylmethane Dyes from 4-Bromo-N,N-Dimethylaniline".
