Abstract
The design and construction of a simple digital interface for controlling a quadrupole mass spectrometer (HP 5985) and collecting data using a PC with an Intel 486 CPU is described. The asynchronous digital interface to the HP 5985 consists of separate 16-bit input and output ports with a write-strobe to initiate commands to the mass spectrometer and a status flag to indicate data validity for read/write operations. The host computer drives the interface via an enhanced version of the industry standard DIO24, the CIO-DIO48. The design of the CIO-DIO48 computer board is based on the industry workhorse 82C55 Programmable Peripheral Interface chips, which have two byte-wide bidirectional data ports, two 4-bit bidirectional data or control ports, and a control/status register which is used to configure data direction of the ports and mode of operation. An on-board PC/XT/AT bus interface plugs into an extra slot in the computer. All other electonic components of the HP 5985 can be used without modification.
