National Mole Day, 1996

The National Mole Day Foundation, Inc., has selected Molemorial Day as the theme/slogan for National Mole Day, October 23, 1996. Chemists, especially chemistry teachers, are encouraged to celebrate National Mode Day as a way to get people enthused about chemistry. Mole Day is celebrated from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. on October 23 to commemorate Amadeo Avogadro and the Avogadro number, 6.02 x1023, the basic unit of counting chemical quantities.

To join the organization, send dues of U.S. $10 to: National Mole Day Foundation, Inc., 1220 South 5th Street, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821-2705. Members receive an official NMDF idea kit, a lapel pin, and periodic informative newsletters. The National Mole Day Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation founded for the purpose of getting all persons, especially kids, enthused about chemistry. Superconductivity for High School Students

The booklet "A Teacher's Guide to Superconductivity for High School Students" by H. Richard Kerchner and Bob Dull is now available on the World Wide Web site http://www.ornl.gov/HTSC/htsc.html. The booklet reviews current and future uses of superconductors and how they work. It also discusses the history, physics, chemistry, and applications of superconductors, and it features ample demonstrations, student problems, and experiments for use in the classroom.

Technology in Schools Conference

The Texas Association of School Boards will host its fifth annual Technology in Schools Conference April 17 - 19, 1997, at the INFOMART in Dallas. The conference provides superintendents, technology coordinators, teachers, and board members with the latest information about technology products, services, and innovative practices by featuring site visits, breakout sessions, and a commercial exhibit floor. For more information, contact Mike Rains, Debbie LaRoche, or Lee Williams at 800/580-8272 or 512/467-0222.

Tutorials in Computational Chemistry

"Handbook of Computational Chemistry" edited by Tim Clark, the first in a series of tutorials in computational chemistry, has recently been released. This first tutorial examines molecular orbital theory and applications and blends theory and practical applications. The other topics in the series cover force fields, ab initio theory, spectroscopy, QSAR, and application examples in computational chemistry. All are available in English, Japanese, German, and French languages.

Both print and electronic versions will be available. To place an order or for more information and a list of content/example chapters in each of the tutorials, contact Science Learning at http://www.sciencelearn.com. The postal address is Science Learning Ltd., 65 Cliff Road, Tramore, Co. Waterford, Republic of Ireland.

Short Course in Membrane Separations

A Practical Short Course in Membrane Separations in Food Processing will be presented at Texas A&M University from April 27 - May 1, 1997. For information or registration, contact Sefa Koseoglu, Food Protein Research & Development Center, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-2476; 409/845-2744 (fax); 409/845-2741 (phone).
