December 1996 Featured on the Cover
The coffee beans on the cover, together with the phase diagram for carbon dioxide, represent one of the applications of supercritical fluid extraction discussed by Phelps, Smart, and Wai in Past, Present, and Possible Future Applications of Supercritical Fluid Extraction Technology. The pictures superimposed on the phase diagram show a liquid-vapor equilibrium below the critical temperature and pressure, CO2 at the critical point, and supercritical fluid CO2.

The photos were taken in a high pressure view cell by Tony Clifford and Keith Bartle of the Chemistry Department at Leeds University.

The cover was designed by Betsy True.
