September 1996 Featured on the Cover
A close-up picture of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (B-Z) reaction occurring in a petri dish is highlighted on the cover. This is one frame from a video sequence on the ChemDemos II Videodisc, this month's offering from JCE: Software. The B-Z reaction also features in "The BZ REaction: An Experimental and Model Studies in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory" by Omar Benini et al. They have taken this popular demonstration and transformed it into a laboratory experience that involves students in chemical kinetics and numerical integration for data analysis. In "Nonlinear Dynamics of the BZ Reaction: A Simple Experiment That Illustrates Limit Cycles, Chaos, Bifurcations, and Noise" Peter Strizhak and Michael Menzinger develop the principles that underlie the B-Z and other oscillating reaction.

Kelly Houston Jetzer performed the demonstration featured here and Jerry Jacobsen was responsible for capturing the reaction on video and digitizing it.

The cover was designed by Betsy True.
