Writing Assignments in Physical Chemistry

Abstract
The discussion of quantum chemistry in physical chemistry was expanded to include the history of its development and a fuller discussion of its interpretation by using the supplemental text, In Search of Schroedinger's Cat. Students wrote essays which served as a check that they had completed the reading and provided a forum for a discussion of the ideas. An additional benefit was the stimulation of class discussion of the meaning of quantum theory and the way theories are developed. This type of paired reading/writing assignment could be used in almost any chemistry class where an outside text could expand the coverage of lecture material.
