This paper describes an interesting kinetics experiment involving a reaction that can be analyzed in terms of a reversible, two-step consecutive mechanism. The reduction of chromium(VI) by glutathione, GSH, which follows such a reaction scheme, can be conveniently studied in real-time spectrometrically. Two methods for estimating the rate constants of interest are discussed: exponential stripping and global nonlinear regression analysis. The reaction described is highly amenable to analysis, and is thus very suitable for the undergraduate physical chemistry or biochemistry laboratory.
