1997 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry, awarded by Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society:

A. Truman Schwartz, Macalester College, St. Paul, MN

Call for Award Nominations

Anyone except a member of the Award Committee or a currently enrolled student of the nominee may submit one nomination in any given year. This includes non-ACS members, high school principals, and supervisors. Contact Cheryl Brown at the ACS (800/227-5558 ext. 6022 or c_brown@acs.org) for more information and a nomination form. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 1997.

Norris Award

Nominations are being received for the 1998 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry. The Norris Award, one of the oldest awards given by a Section of the American Chemical Society, is presented annually by the Northeastern Section. The Award consists of a certificate and an honorarium of $3000. Nominees must have served with special distinction as teachers of chemistry at any level: secondary school, college, and/or graduate school. Since 1951 awardees have included eminent and less widely known but equally effective teachers at all levels.

Nominations for 1998 will be received until April 15, 1998. The nominating material must be limited to 30 pages and focus specifically on the nominee's contribution to and effectiveness in teaching chemistry, as distinguished from research. These qualities are demonstrated by a condensed curriculum vitae as a portion of a nominating letter which, in turn, is supported by as many seconding letters as are necessary to convey the nominee's qualification for the award. These may show the impact of the nominee's teaching in inspiring colleagues and students toward an active life in chemistry and/or related sciences, or may attest to the influence of the nominee's other activities in chemical education, such as textbooks, journal articles, or other professional activity at the national level. Materials should be of 8 1/2 by 11 inch size, but should not include books or reprints.

Nominations should be sent before April 15, 1998, to Charles L. Braun, Department of Chemistry, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755-1477.

Recognize an Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher

Each year, the American Chemical Society (ACS) recognizes high school chemistry teachers and their contributions by presenting a Regional Award in High School Chemistry Teaching. These awards are given annually at ACS regional meetings across the country. Each recipient of the Award automatically becomes a candidate for the national James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching which is sponsored by the Albemarle Corporation. Candidates are recognized for

  • quality of teaching,
  • ability to challenge and inspire students,
  • extracurricular work in chemistry,
  • willingness to stay current in the field.

Applications Invited, Ullyot Scholarship

The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) announces the availability of the Glenn E. and Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot Scholarship Fund. The goal of the Ullyot Scholarship is to advance public understanding of the importance of the chemical sciences to the public welfare.

The third annual Ullyot scholarship, which will be awarded for summer 1998, offers a stipend of $3500 plus modest travel and research support. The purpose of the stipend is to support a minimum of four weeks research on the heritage of the chemical sciences, utilizing the resources of CHF's Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, other area libraries, and associated resources.

Applications must be received by January 30, 1998, and should include a curriculum vitae, a one-page description of the proposed research, an outline of a specific product as an outcome of the scholarship, and the telephone numbers or email addresses of two references. The proposal should demonstrate how the resources of the Othmer Library are relevant to the applicant's project and should be sent to Leo Slater, Chemical Heritage Foundation, 315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106; phone: 215/925-2178, ext. 224; fax: 215/925-1954.

ExploraVision Awards

The National Science Teachers Association announces the 1997-1998 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Award competition. The awards, for K-12 science students, challenge students to envision technologies that could exist 20 years in the future. The competition, which was begun in 1993, is open to all K-12 students in the United States and Canada. Students participate in teams of three or four with a teacher-advisor (and an optional community advisor) in one of four grade level categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

There is a schedule for the competition, with February 3, 1998, as the deadline for entries. At this time teams present their future technology in the form of storyboards and essays. In March, 48 regional semifinalist teams are announced. Regional winners receive $500 to produce a video from their storyboards. In April, 12 finalist teams are selected; and in June, the first- and second-place winners are honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC.

Each students on a first-place team receives a $10,000 U.S. savings bond or Canadian savings bond of comparable issue price. Each students on a second-place team receives a $5000 U.S. savings bond or Canadian savings bond of comparable issue price. Their teacher-advisors and schools receive selected Toshiba products. For more information telephone 800-EXPLOR-9 or access the ExplorAvision Web site at http://www.nsta.org/programs/explora.htm.
