A few months ago, in the April issue, we first brought up the topic of anniversaries. Indeed you will be hearing a lot more about anniversaries in the next year or soif we are publishing volume 74 this year, that must mean we have begun talking about our 75th anniversary! On page 763 you will see the first of what will be a series of notices titled, The Journal Celebrates! Since we are planning the anniversary celebration for the chemical education community, we will ask for your input and suggestions for the various things that will occur. The topic of this month's notice is the Gala Poster Session and Mixer that will be held on Sunday evening, August 23, 1998, at the Fall ACS Meeting in Boston. Our correspondence with readers tells us that the Journal touches your lives in ways more varied than we could ever imagine. We hope you will seize this opportunity to share your experiences with others.

As one part of the 75th celebration, we planned to first identify and then contact companies that were early advertisers in the Journal. Alas, all advertising in our copies before 1933 was discarded before binding! That is where you can help us: if you have copies prior to 1933, could you send us photocopies of the advertising? Please contact us (preferably at jce@chem.wisc.edu) before sending the materials along.

This is the tenth anniversary of JCE Software. Marking it is the recent appointment of Jon L. Holmes as editor. Jon has been a part of JCE Software since its inception, serving as its technical editor. As one part of its anniversary celebration, Jon and new technical editor Nancy Gettys have released several new CD-ROMs, some of which are described on the inside back cover. They have also launched the Chemistry Comes Alive! series of CDs that will digitize a great deal of the enormous amount of video footage of chemical reactions, some of which has appeared previously on videodiscs. You will also notice that JCE Online has been updated, expanded, and redesigned. There is so much information in JCE Online now that we will highlight several facets each month (see next column).

Things To Look For

There are a couple of new items in this issue that you might like to look for. First is a Summer Reading section that was put together by Ed Walsh with the help of some friends. Here you will find suggestions from four colleagues of what they think makes for interesting summer reading. Another item is the first few installments in a series of fillers that describe in words and pictures what you will find on JCE Online. Numbers one through four in this series are scattered through this issue; expect to see more in the future. What will be the total number in the series? It is hard to tell, especially since this is an area of rapid growth.

Coming in the August issue you will find a listing of the complete Division of Chemical Education program for the 1997 Fall ACS Meeting in Las Vegas as well as a guide to the chemical exposition that is being prepared by The McNeill Group, our advertising representatives. Then in September you can look forward to another Book Buyers Guide, which will again be a separate issue inserted in the plastic mailing envelope.

Changes at Journal House

As this is being written, Nancy Gettys, technical editor for JCE Software, is off for the week because she is marrying Don Kliese of Madison. She will retain her name, and we are happy that she will remain in Madison. Next week she will be back at Journal House editing, debugging, and otherwise preparing software for publication. Congratulations Nancy and Don!

This is a reminder that if you are planning a summer workshop or short course, you should contact the Journal. We can send for your participants sample issues or copies of our newly revised JCE Publications/Software Catalog that lists all of our materials. Of course, you will also want to show them all of the great things that are to be found on JCE Online at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/.

Remarks Worth Remembering

At the symposium honoring Joe Lagowski at the San Francisco Meeting, there were many fine talks and much reminiscing. (Abstracts of all are available in the Division of Chemical Education's Newsletter and Abstract booklet.) In his own talk at the close of the symposium, Lagowski made two pithy statements that were jotted down and double checked for accuracy, and are passed along to a wider audience than was able to attend "Press On Regardless".
