Abstract
A simple and quick experiment was developed to determine the enthalpy of vaporization of polar solvents at elevated pressures and temperatures. The liquid-vapor phase curve was determined by heating a polar solvent in a microwave oven under constant volume conditions. The solvent was rapidly heated to a safe elevated temperature and pressure in the microwave oven. Then the pressure and temperature were measured simultaneously during the near-equilibrium conditions which occur under thermal cooling. From this data the liquid-vapor phase curve was constructed. The results agree to within 5% of published high pressure data.
