Abstract
We present an analogy which relates the one-dimensional mechanical equilibrium of a rigid block between two springs and the chemical equilibrium of two perfect gases. This mechanical analogue illustrates the concepts of the chemical potential, the extent of reaction, and the reaction Gibbs energy.
