Last month we provided you with an introduction
to JCE Online, the WWW site of JCE. We outlined how
JCE Online is divided into areas for each JCE publication.
This month we will focus on the Journal area of JCE Online.

The and symbols are used in the
Journal to denote materials that are available online. They appear in
the Table of Contents and at the top of each article that
contains online material. Abstracts to all articles and
selected full article are accessible to any JCE Online visitor.
When the full article is universally available, it is denoted with
a symbol. All universally available materials are
provided in HTML format. Journal subscribers also get access to
any supplementary materials provided by the author.
Articles that have such materials are denoted with a
symbol. In addition to all of the above, JCE Online+ subscribers
can access the full text of all articles published in the
Journal as Adobe Acrobat PDF files.
Navigation about JCE Online
The keys to navigation about JCE
Online are the menu bars at the top of each page
and the navigation side bar at the left of each
page. Within the Journal area of JCE Online,
there are always two menu bars at the top of each page. The top menu bar provides one-click
access to the JCE Online home page, each of the JCE Online areas, and the Contact JCE
page. (This "global" menu bar appears at the top
of all pages at JCE Online except the home page and the News page.) The second menu bar
provides one-click access to topics that pertain
to the Journal: The Journal News page, the current issue, past
issues, JCE Index, subscription information, and information for
authors. (This "Journal" menu bar appears at the top of all pages
in the Journal area of JCE Online except the
Journal home page and the Journal News page.)
The navigation side bars denote the current area and are
color coded for each area of JCE Online. Just below the JCE logo is
a menu of, usually, six items. This menu varies depending on
where you are. Below this menu there may also be from one to
several buttons that provide links to materials related to the current page.
Where Do I Find Journal Supplementary Materials?
The first step is to go to the
Journal home page by clicking "Journal" in the menu on the JCE Online
home page. From here you can access the
Journal "News" containing recent items of interest to
Journal readers; the Table of Contents of the "Current Issue", the latest issue
available online; the "Past Issues" that are available online (July
1995 to present); "JCE Index", the online searchable index to
all articles published in the Journal; information about how
to "Subscribe" to the Journal including options available,
pricing, order forms, and a Subscriber FAQ; and
information "For Authors".
The universal stepping stone to all the
Journal materials at JCE Online is the issue Table of Contents. You
get to the Table of Contents of a specific issue via the Past
Issues item in the Journal menu. All issues of the current
year are displayed. Click one of the issues to go to its Table
of Contents. Issues of other years that are available online
are accessed by clicking on the desired year in the menu in
the navigation side bar.
Each issue's menu is presented in the navigation
side bar. It provides access to the Table of Contents, In This
Issue, Especially for High School Teachers, Editorial,
Letters, and Reviews of the issue. For issues starting with
September 1996, below this menu is a button for JCE Online+
subscribers to access the "digital reprint" of the current article.
The Table of Contents is arranged like the one
printed in the Journal except that each of the sections is listed
at the top (clicking the section name here goes directly to
that section of the Table of Contents). Each article listed is
linked to its abstract or to the article. It is from this abstract
or article that you will find the links to any
supplementary materials via the JCE Supplement button in the side bar.
The discussion above assumes that you know the
issue in which the article you are looking for appeared. This
is the case when you see that additional information is
available online while reading the Journal. But what if you
do not know the issue? JCE Index comes to the rescue.
JCE Index
JCE Index is the online searchable index to all
articles published in the Journal. It allows you to search the titles
of articles for a particular word or partial word. You can
also search for an author or by keywords. Successful searches
return a list of citations, and entries in the list that refer
to articles available online are linked to the online abstract
or article. You can access the JCE Index search page from
anywhere within the Journal area of JCE Online by clicking
JCE Index in the Journal menu bar at the top of the page.
Next month we will describe how to use JCE Index and give
you some tips to make your searching more successful.
We hope that you find this explanation about
finding Journal materials at JCE Online useful. In the future
we will be adding a search feature to JCE Online that will
allow you to search the entire contents of the site for a
word or phrase similar to the major Internet search sites. In
the meantime, if you have any suggestions on making
things easier to find at JCE Online we would like to hear
them (email: jceonline@chem.wisc.edu).
