We Go on the Road
If you are attending either the ACS Spring Meeting
in Dallas or the NSTA Meeting in Las Vegas, look for us,
beneath the familiar JCE banner. Our booth will be open
at the Dallas Meeting from Monday, March 30
through Wednesday, April 1. Look for booth 950952 where we
will have lots of Journal materials on display including
CD-ROMs, popular software, Classroom Activities, and many
of our print publications. We will have a small, free token,
such as JCE pencils or bookmarks. Many of the staff will
be there - John Moore, Jon Holmes, Nancy Gettys, Mary Saecker, Lin Morris, Richard Schwenz, Emory Howell,
and Betty Moore. Hal Harris will be there, spending most of
his time visiting publishers booths so that the information in
the Chemical Education Resource Shelf and the Book
Buyers Guide is up to date and accurate. Stop by and see us.
As Emory Howell describes on the opposite page, he
and some secondary school feature editors will have a booth
at the NSTA Meeting. They will also present a free workshop.
Submitting a Manuscript?
If you are writing a manuscript for submission to
the Journal or planning to, here is some important and
helpful information. We have recently revised our Guide to
Submissions, our Submission Keywords, and our Instructions
for Electronic Submission; we have added some guidelines
for formatting the Literature Cited in your manuscript.
Special guidelines for lab experiments appeared in December
1996. You can find these documents on JCE Online or you
can contact us and have us send them by mail or by fax.
Student Awards
If this is the March issue, then Spring is just around
the corner. With Spring come special programs that give
students awards for excellence: in chemistry departments, ACS
Local Sections, and school systems. Many individuals look
for meaningful gifts for graduates as well. We pass along a
suggestion that has been used by many organizations - get these young people off to a great start in chemistry by giving them a Journal subscription. There is even a special reduced
price for gift subscriptions. Contact us directly (information
appears in the masthead on page 254) or use the
subscription form between pages 296 and 297. If you provide
adequate notice, we will get a sample issue to you for presentation
at the time of the award presentation.
Distribute JCE at Workshops and Short Courses
As many of you know, we will make sample copies
of the Journal available for workshops, short courses,
regional meetings, chemistry or science education classes, etc. In
addition to the print issues, we can send our complete JCE
Publications/Software catalog, a selection of our new and
very popular Classroom Activities, and other materials as well.
If you need a door prize, sometimes we can help with that.
We are happy to say that we have had an increasing
number of requests. We enjoy working with readers on
these projects - just give us a couple of weeks of advance
warning before materials are needed.
Help Us Locate Our Earliest Subscribers
This is a reminder that as a part of our
75th anniversary celebrations we are looking for someone who was an
original subscriber or reader of the
Journal. If you are that person, or know of someone who is, please let us know.
Perhaps your subscription dates from 1934, instead of 1924. Let
us know. Tell us a bit about why you began subscribing and
why you have kept on subscribing. You may well be a winner!
We will award a free one-year extension to the subscription
of whomever has subscribed the longest, and will publish the name of
the person - and the cover of the issue - in this column. To be eligible,
please reply by April 1, 1998.
Quick Reminders
Here are a few quick reminders of things you won't want to miss.
- Be a Charter Subscriber to JCE Online+ if you haven't done so yet. It opens up a world of information at
http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/Plus/Subscribe/. Try it out. Thousands of your colleagues are visiting the site each month.
- You can be a
Journal Ambassador. Help us recruit more subscribers. There are gift subscriptions available at a reduced
price and if you bring in six year's worth of subscriptions you get a personal bonus as well. You can also help us by distributing
See the January 1998 issue for details.
- You can be a
Journal reviewer. To get started simply fill out our reviewer interest form, available on JCE Online, by fax, or
by mail. Return the form to us and your name and reviewer characteristics will be entered into our database, to be matched
to incoming manuscripts.
- If you haven't already done so, order JCE CD 1997. Use the order form that appears inside the back cover of the
November 1997 issue or use the form on JCE Online. The CD contains all the text, graphics, tables, abstracts, and color. It contains
the supplementary materials and complete annual index, too. It is easy to find and view articles, and you can do full-text
searching for a word, partial word, or phrase.
- The JCE Online column this month (see p 382) features JCE Index - the full index from 1924 to the present, online
and easy to use. The column has some tips for making searches faster and more sharply focused.
