This book has a selection of 82 problems taken
from the literature dating from 1992. Each exercise presents a
partial reaction scheme, omitting some reagent or
intermediate. The problems are of varying complexity: some are
appropriate for upper-level undergraduates, while others will
challenge senior-level graduate students. A complete reference to
the original work is given, although, of course, students are
encouraged to attempt the problem before consulting the
literature. Suggestions for further readings are given with
each synthesis. Discussion questions are also provided,
usually focusing on the mechanism or stereochemistry of the
particular reaction. Although these serve as guides for further
discussion, they vary considerably in quality and length and are
probably the weakest part of the book. A comprehensive list
of common abbreviations, such as HMPA, MOM, and
Fmoc, is a valuable resource. The paperback price of $28 makes it
a reasonable purchase for students.
